André Filipe Alves Monteiro (born March 16, 1988), aka Ukra, is a Portuguese footballer who plays for F.C. Porto, mainly as a forward.

Club career

Born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Ukra began playing football for hometown's F.C. Famalicão, moving at age 13 to national powerhouse F.C. Porto to complete his formation.

In 2007–08, he got his first taste of first-team football, spending one season on loan to another northern side, Varzim SC, in the second division; in the following two years, he continued in the same predicament, now south with S.C. Olhanense.

Ukra netted six times in 30 matches in his debut season, as the Algarve outfit returned to the top flight after 34 years.

In November 2009, it was reported that Ukra was being scouted by Newcastle United of the English Football League Championship after an under-21 match against England at Wembley,[1] a game in which he played the full ninety minutes.[2]

International career

In mid-2009, courtesy of his solid Olhanense displays, Ukra was summoned for the Portuguese U-21s.[3]

He represented the nation at the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship,[4] and also took part in the unsuccessful qualifying campaign for the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.[5]

Personal

Ukra's nickname derives from his youth, when his then-blond hair led to him being called "Ukrainian" ("Ucraniano" in Portuguese), which was then shortened to "Ukra".[6]
