Illyrian Mythology
Illyrian Gods
The mythology of the Illyrians is only known through mention of Illyrian deities on Roman Empire period monuments. The Illyrians did not develop a uniform cosmology on which to center their religious practices. "Unlike Celts, Dacians, Thracians or Scythians, there is no indication that Illyrians developed a uniform cosmology on which their religious practice was centred. The Illyrians followed two cults: the Cult of the Serpent and the cult of the Sun. The Cult of the Serpent was in the southern Illyrian territories and the Cult of the Sun was in the North.
The historians say that the Illyrians believed that everything was "born" out of Mother Earth (Genusa). The origin of the name Ganusa has two theories. The first theory is that the name Genusa comes from the Greek word Genesis wich means begining. The secong theory is that the name Genusa is derived from the old Albanian words (GE = DHE = SOIL and NUSA = NUSJA = BRIDE). The other important god of the Illyrians was "Ou". This word seems to be directly related to the old Albanian word "Ou" which means "I". In Modern Albanian the word "I" is "Unë". So in the illyrian mythology everything has the origin from the marriage between Genusa and Ou. From this marriage was born Mikon (The od of friendshp), Zeau (THe god of wisdom), Redon (The god of the seas), Korroti (The hypothesised god of war), Broketa (The Goddess of food and fate), Shkumbe (The goddess of beauty), Anzotika (The goddess of love) and another Genusa "a clone" of her mother".
