It is among the least populous area codes in North America, serving only about 320,000 people. It was created as a split from 616 on Sunday, March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing.
Area code 906 is in the Eastern Time Zone except that the counties which border Wisconsin are in the Central Time Zone.
History
Area code 906 was created in anticipation that the Upper Peninsula of Michigan would seek to secede from the State of Michigan to either become part of Wisconsin, or to form the State of Superior.[1] The separate area code would have been needed in either case, because area codes are not generally permitted to cross state lines. Despite dating from 1961, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2043,[2] owing mainly to the relatively low population of the Upper Peninsula.
