Tom Meighan

Thomas Peter Meighan (born 11 January 1981 in Leicester) is an English musician, best known as the lead vocalist for Indie Rock band Kasabian.

Career

Meighan has been the lead vocalist of Kasabian since the band's inception in Leicester in 1999.[1] He sings lead vocals on the majority of the band's recordings and does not play any instruments within the group, apart from tambourine on occasion and guitar on live renditions of The Nightworkers.[2]

Media controversies

He is widely known for his comments in the media, which frequently relate to other musicians.

Regarding the reportedly depressing nature of emo music and its listeners, he has said: "Teenagers are better than that. I want to tell them to be positive about life. You've been brought up well by your parents, so don't sit around in your bedroom cutting your wrists. Grow up."[3]

After playing the Ibiza Rocks 2007 event, Meighan told The Skinny that he "wouldn't give a fuck if the island sank"[4] Additionally, in an interview with the New Musical Express, he said that David S. Sexton and Mark Wahlberg were "absolute fannies".

Also after the Live Earth concert he said that he wished to see Madonna perform as she looked like his old gym teacher, although he then went on to say that his old gym teacher was a man.[5] He has also called Julian Casablancas as "a posh fucking skier", Pete Doherty "a fucking tramp", and Justin Timberlake "a midget with whiskers".[5]

Tom is also known for his raucous behaviour at awards ceremonies and other celebrity gatherings, claiming it was always his intention to be the "first to arrive and the last to leave".

He was reportedly offered the role of Count Hans Axel von Fersen in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, but later stated he did not go through with it as he was committed to his band.[citation needed]

He was one of a number of celebrities to criticize Simon Cowell's handling of Susan Boyle, stating "It will torture her for the rest of life. She is not ready for it and she is not made for it. She is being manipulated. It's horrible."[6] He also commented on Robbie Williams in 2009: "He's fucked up and doesn't know what to do with himself. It's not very nice to see. If I looked like he did on The X Factor, my mum would kick the shit out of me".[6]
