Changes is the 12th book in The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher's continuing series about wizard detective Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Changes was released on April 6, 2010,[1] and debuted at #1 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Best Sellers list,[2] dropping to #3 in its second week on the list.[3]

Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden's lover—until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it.

Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it-against Harry. To prevail this time, he may have no choice but to embrace the raging fury of his own untapped dark power. Because Harry's not fighting to save the world...

He's fighting to save his child.

Synopsis

Changes focuses on the three tumultuous days of many drastic changes occurring in Harry Dresden's life after learning he and Susan Rodriguez have a daughter. Margaret "Maggie" Angelica (named for Harry's mother) was born after their romantic interlude in Death Masks. Susan had hidden knowledge of the child from Dresden for the child's safety, not only because of his list of enemies, but hers as well. She also cites his own dangerous lifestyle and lack of ability to provide a stable home as part of her reasons.

Over the course of Harry's attempt to rescue his daughter, Harry ends up going through hell. He, Susan, and Martin attempt to retrieve digital information from the top floor of Harry's office building. The Red Court has purchased Harry's building, which irritates him as he's been paying (increased) rent to the Red Court's Duchess Arianna (Ortega's widow) for almost two years. She was the one who was behind the discovery and kidnapping of Maggie. Susan and Martin leave Harry outside (due to his unintentional disruptions on modern technology) to stand guard when he notices a Red Court hit squad entering the building. During the ensuing fight, Martin reveals the Red Court has wired the building to blow up. They have placed C4 explosive all around Harry's office. Harry shouts "They told us they were removing asbestos!" Once outside, the building does blow up and Harry's office is erased from the map. Harry groans at Susan and Martin "I just mailed my rent check yesterday."

Harry and his apprentice, Molly, go to the White Council's headquarters only to find the Duchess Arianna and newly-appointed Senior Council member Cristos giving in-synch speeches about peace. Harry furiously demands the little girl (he has the presence of mind not to refer to her as his daughter) back and challenges her to a duel in front of a thousand wizards. She graciously responds while simultaneously giving him a backhanded insult/challenge, and he storms out. In the lounge area, he meets the leader of the White Council, The Merlin, who reveals he does not buy a word of it and intends to wipe the Red Court into extinction rather than declare peace. Harry and Molly return to Chicago, and Harry goes back to his house and asks Bob about the images he, Susan and Martin found at his office. Bob figures that they would be used for a ritual sacrifice.

Harry is then tipped off by Murphy that he is about to be harassed by the FBI, due to ex-SI agent Rudolph's lying to his superiors concerning Harry's character and taking advantage of the explosion of Harry's office. Harry manages to get Bob and the two Swords of the Cross under his care to the Nevernever directly on the other side of his house, making this the first time he's been there (he had figured before now that the last thing he needed was to thin the barrier and make it more easy to attack him). After a run-in with one very tough centipede (now two, thanks to its' regeneration ability and his lack of foresight), he manages to stow Bob, the Swords and several "questionable" materials in his lab and falls back into his lab, exhausted, where he is taken in by the FBI. When he recovers, he is questioned by an Agent Tilly (Harry nicknames him "Slim"), who kicks Rudolph out of the interrogation room due to his unprofessionalism. Tilly instantly can tell that Harry is innocent (as Harry notes, due to a minor unnoticed psychic talent, and lets him go. On the steps outside, Harry is shot at, though the bullets only hit his defensive spell-covered duster. Harry realizes that Rudolph is being manipulated by the Red Court, and the assassins were initially supposed to shoot Rudolph to tie up any loose ends.

On returning home, he finds that Susan and Martin had returned and were completely suppressed by Harry's godmother, Leanansidhe. He has an epiphany from her words, and asks her if his mother left anything for him. She smiles and offers him his mother's legacy, a gem that fits into his pentacle that contains the totality of her knowledge of the Ways through the Nevernever (which were notable, to say the very least). Harry accepts it, and uses it to reach the Red Court's storage depot they knew of in Nevada. Harry, Susan and Martin raid it and find several ceremonial artifacts that were in-transit to Mexico.

They return to Chicago, and Harry finds a letter from one of the Wardens who delivered it for Anastasia, in the event of her disappearance. It warns him not to go back, as around 40% of the senior wardens (among them, his friend, Ramirez) were either illegally detained by Cristo or, like with Anastasia, simply vanished after going to confront him about it. Harry then contacts his mentor, Ebenezar, who warns him about what is going on and cannot support him. Harry considers using his Green notebook, which contains his dangerous information sources that have very high prices, but opts for the lesser Blue notebook instead. Much later, the most he was able to confirm was that Maggie is alive. He then contacts the Archive by writing a note asking for her help, and she contacts him via her bodyguard, Kincaid, who informs him that she can't directly help him either due to the Archive's forced limitations as a neutral entity. Harry tells him to tell her that he will use the Green notebook next, regardless of price, and she tells him through Kincaid it would be a better idea to contact the person he least wants to. Harry sighs, and arranges a meeting with Johnnie Marcone. Marcone then directs him to his supernatural consultant, Ms. Gard, who brings him to her company's (Monoc Securities) base in Norway. In there, she introduces him to the CEO, Donar Vadderung, who tells him (for free, which makes Harry greatly suspicious) that the Red Court is going to use Maggie for a bloodline-destroying curse in Chichén Itzá.

The next of Harry's personal possessions to go is his car, which gets destroyed by the same Red Court hit squad (or rather a large monster under their control baring a Mayan name which Harry shortens to "the Ick"), during his stake out on Rudolph's house to trace his "handlers" or protect him from possible cleaners. It is crushed into a solid mass with Thomas' car during the ensuing battle. Harry expresses the reaction typical of Dresden, "it's not a fancy car or sexy car, but it's MY car." Harry's oak staff is also destroyed with the Beetle. Thomas is badly injured, and awakens his Hunger from regenerating his wounds and almost goes after Molly, after which Harry kicks him out of his house until he recovers himself. Then Harry and his companions suffer another attack by the hit squad while still in Harry's boarding house (this time a molotov cocktail from a moving car). The entire building is set on fire and Harry manages to get his elderly landlady out but becomes severely injured falling from a ladder while attempting to rescue his other neighbors, suffering burns and a fractured spine, leaving him virtually paralyzed. Sanya, the only currently active Knight of the Cross, appears at the right moment and manages to save his neighbors. Harry's boarding house burns to the groud, and the whereabouts of his cat Mister are unknown (he is ok, though, having escaped through a broken window). Harry and his friends take refuge at St. Mary's Cathedral. While left alone, Harry tries to get help from the Archangel Uriel, who tells him that this was a result of Harry's free will and thus he cannot directly interfere. He does, however, confirm that Maggie is Harry's daughter, something that had been bothering him since his blood-based tracking spells had not worked.

As a last resort to heal his body and save Maggie, he contacts Mab, The Winter Queen of the Fae, who brings him (or at least his mind, in an apparent out-of-body experience) to the Stone Table first seen in "Summer Knight." He accepts Queen Mab's ongoing offer to become the new Winter Knight, but only if he is allowed to save Maggie first, and if he will not be made to lift his hand against those he loves. Mab agrees to Harry's terms and consummates their agreement by having Harry kill Lloyd Slate, the traitorous Winter Knight introduced in "Summer Knight." After Harry kills Slate, he and Mab finish the consumation through sex -- Harry notes he can't exactly call it that, though; as he puts it, "you don't have sex with a thunderstorm." She also gives his godmother, Leanansidhe, to support him in his current quest. On waking up, he finds that Father Forthill had called medical examiner Waldo Butters in, who was currently defibrillating Harry to restart his heart. Butters gives a grim prognosis for Harry's apparent condition, just before before being shot in the back by a hitman who suddenly stormed in. The hitman is subdued by Harry, who has made a miraculous full recovery thanks to Mab, and finds that Butters is fine thanks to foresight (he not only was wearing a kevlar vest, but had brought chalk and holy water along). The hitman tells them (after some light threatening by Sanya) that he was hired by a woman who looked exactly like Susan. Harry goes with Sanya to recruit help tracking her from Toot and the "Pizza Lord's Guard," who very unsubtly reveals what happened with Mab ("Did your tongue get stuck to her, like on that Christmastime show?") and Harry's new position as Winter Knight, and also that Mab made sure everyone in the Nevernever learned of it by reflecting the scene in all the water in the land. Sanya gives Harry a strange look after learning this, then mocks Harry with poor American slang ("you tapped that ass... I presume it was Phat"), then tells him to stay strong and keep laughing no matter how difficult it gets.

Toot tells Harry that Susan is being imprisoned in a building, which turns out to be the FBI building Harry just got out of. Harry goes in and find Murphy speaking with Tilly, and tells Tilly the truth. Ruldolph gets involved, and then the lights go out and they hear a vampire's screech. Ruldolph instantly panics and regresses into his "happy place." Harry and Susan cause a distraction while the others escape, and force the vampires and the large monster from earlier into the Nevernever. They all land in the middle of the Earlking's lair, where Harry takes advantage of a verbal slip of the Earlking's to be protected by the guest/host rights of the Fae. The Earlking pits them in a trial of combat against the vampire group's to determine who is correct and most determined, and Harry and Susan manage to defeat the large monster and gain their freedom. They appear back in the physical world, but find they are apparently too late to save Maggie due to the difference in time flow between worlds. Then Harry's godmother pulls up in a very nice car to aid him.

Leah, in her typical Fae fashion, plays word games and jibes Harry while assisting him. She outfits Harry and Susan with powerful magical armor of Faerie make, fashioning Harry's clothing into a Conquistador's armor (as a personal shot at Ortega's widow, who hated them with a passion) and Susan's into a South American ceremonial look. They arrive at the Church to find Murphy, Thomas, Martin, Sanya, Molly and Mouse already assembled and waiting for them. Harry gives Murphy the sword Fidelacchius, the sword of Faith, which she tries to turn down but he tells her that she only needs to use it for the moment for the sake of his daughter. He offers Susan Amoracchius, the sword of Love, telling her that her love will allow her to wield it despite her vampiric half (which it does). On the way to the first Way, Harry is contacted by Ebenezar via magic stone, and tells him the whole story of what is going on. Ebenezar warns Harry not to go near the White Council's base, as Arianna had spread a disease there during her "peaceful" visit. The group then heads through the Ways now open to Harry due to his mother's gem, but come out too far to swiftly reach the site, so Leah turns them into hounds to quickly move through the dense forest. She considers leaving them that way, but to everyone's surprise Mouse reveals himself to be arguably more intelligent as Harry (and just as blunt), threatening in perfect English to literally rip off Leah's rear if she does not comply. Despite being the second most powerful being in Winter, she appears to take his threat seriously and complies. Again in human form, Harry questions why Mouse never talked to him and Leah mentioned that he never listened.

Harry's group arrives on the scene and, through his usual diplomacy (overwhelming force and blunt shouting) Harry is able to challenge the Duchess Arianna to a duel, making an agreement with the Red King through a translator that his daughter will not be harmed during it. Harry eventually triumphs, but the Red King (suddenly speaking perfect English) uses a loophole in the bargain, mentioning that HE never spoke a word to Harry, only his slave did so their bargain is void, and on top of that he only agreed that Harry's daughter would not be harmed during the duel, not after. This brings about an epic battle. Susan, Sanya and Murphy effectively wield the Swords of the Cross against the most ancient vampires (the Lords of the Outer Night). Murphy apparently becomes possessed by an Archangel, decrying the Red Court as murderers and blasphemers, and becomes a one-woman vampire wrecking crew as she slices through attackers with unsettling ease, a halo of light around her head (actually Bob, as Harry told him to protect Murphy from the Outer Nights' spiritual oppression attacks). Molly uses her light-based magic to overwhelm the superior senses of the Red Court, while Thomas slashes away at them as though at a rave or disco. Leah is glimpsed by Harry as tossing magic about all the while laughing like she's playing in the park.

The group is badly outnumbered until Ebenezar McCoy and the "Grey Council" (all mysteriously shrouded in grey robes and hoods) appear through a rift Leah directed. Harry's staff (having been destroyed along with the rest of his possessions) is replaced when Ebenezar hands him his. Harry asks McCoy what he's going to do without his staff when McCoy pulls the "Blackstaff" out of nowhere. He demonstrates his power as the White Council's sanctioned hit-man by pointing the Blackstaff at a 100-man group of mortal security guards who, in Harry's words, "simply die." He then does it again, just as quickly and simply. Along with the Grey Council, an army of "kenku" came to their aid and took the brunt of the Red Court's attack (their king owed Ebenezar a favor). Molly is shot, and Thomas and Mouse stay behind to protect and help her.

At the battle's climax, Harry rushes alone into the Sacrificial Room to stop the ritual. Susan tricks the Red King from harming Maggie with the stealth-granting Fae clothing and the light of Amoracchius, but Martin reveals he has been a traitor to the Fellowship of St. Giles for over 100 years and attacks Susan. Susan interrogates Martin on his involvement with the Red Court and Martin reveals it was he who gave them Maggie's location and divulged her true parentage, and that this ritual was not directed at Harry, but at Harry's mother's father—his grandfather, Ebenezar McCoy, the Blackstaff of the White Council. An enraged Susan attacks Martin and she tears out his throat, completing her transformation into a Red Court vampire just as Harry soulgazes him. From the soulgaze, he realizes that all of Martin's actions have been a 200-year long ploy against the Red Court, and all he did was to ensure that Harry would be there to confront the Red King and have a chance to destroy the Red Court once and for all. Susan, now the youngest full-fledged vampire in all the Red Court, struggles to keep her will for the sake of Maggie, but is already transforming. She begs Harry to save Maggie, so Harry carries her to the sacrificial altar and kills her to complete the ritual, destroying every Red Court Vampire in existence, completely wiping out every segment of the Red Court.

Harry, now in a complete state of shock, finds himself holding Maggie on the steps of the temple, unsure of how they got there and unable to understand what is going on or what anyone is saying. Leah is sitting next to him, directing everyone away from him. He speaks briefly with Ebenezar, who tells him some details about how the Red Court found out about their family ties. They wonder if Cristos is really Black Council, or just stupid. Harry sees Donar Vadderung among the Grey Council, and Ebenezar tells him that he only gets involved when things are about to get bad, and he had taught the original Merlin. The Grey Council leaves, and Murphy takes hold of Maggie while Harry tells her to give her to Father Forthill and have her disappear to the safest place possible, and for him not to know where. Sanya tells Harry that Molly is safe, having gotten airlifted for treatment on a US naval ship at the coast (courtesy of Lara Raith), and is being protected by Thomas and Mouse. They need to leave before the authorities arrive, but Harry is hesitant to leave Susan's remains. In a rare act of pure kindness, Leah promises to take care of them as he would, and to take him to visit her whenever he wishes. Harry quietly puts Bob back into the skull, and is given the keys to Thomas' boat, Water Beetle, from Sanya, who said Thomas told him to.

Harry sits in Water Beetle trying to absorb what happened, still in a daze, when his last possession, the leather duster given to him by Susan, returns to its original form at noon and disintegrates from the damage. He drops it into the lake and watches it sink, changes into his last set of clothes (all the while still dazed/in shock) in preparation for an apparent romantic interlude with Karrin Murphy, who is suffering depression and despondency after learning her job as a police officer will be lost from manipulation by outside parties. He waits for her to come back, then goes onto the deck. Harry hears a pop and a splat behind him as his foot slips, and looks around and wonders who splashed red paint on the boat. When he looks down he remarks "Why did I put a shirt with a bullet hole on?" and falls into the water. Harry thinks he sees a white light, then realizes that it is not peace at the end of a tunnel, but a train heading towards for him, as he hears the repeat of Cassius' Death Curse (from "Death Masks," which was for him to "Die Alone!"), and an unknown, but familiar, female voice saying "Hush now."

Plot points introduced

The White Council: Tensions increase in the White Council as Gregori Cristos garners more influence among the members. Cristos has had several members of the Wardens arrested, including Carlos Ramirez. In addition, about 40% of the Senior Wardens have gone missing including Captain Anastasia Luccio. A large portion of the Council has become sick with a mysterious illness, believed to have been spread by Arianna Ortega when she visits as an 'ambassador'. This includes Injun Joe, the Council's best healer. The Senior Council is backing away from Cristos, giving him room to hang himself.

The Grey Council: The Grey Council makes their first appearance outside of Harry and Ebenezar to help in the battle against the Red Court. Donar Vadderung, CEO of Monoc Securities, actually the Norse god Odin, is revealed to be a member.

Dresden's family: Harry has a daughter. Relations between Harry and Thomas have improved somewhat since Thomas decided to "Stop nibbling and start taking big bites" of his victims again. However this improvement is slight, as Dresden says before taking Thomas' help to save Maggie they have only spoken for minutes since the end of the prior novel.

Soulfire: Harry has a tough time controlling his use of Soulfire when in the heat of battle often drawing a significant amount and wearing himself down rapidly. However, he is using it extremely frequently in combat conditions.

Winter Court of the Fae: The old Winter Knight Lloyd Slate dies at Harry's hands in the Valley of the Stone Table. Harry and Mab then went through the induction ceremony for Harry to become the Winter Knight on the condition that Harry could save his child first. Sanya the Knight of the Cross said, "You...tapped that ass. Presumably, it was phat." In regards to the ceremony when he learned Harry was the new Winter Knight. (the ceremony is magical 'intercourse' on the Stone Table with Mab, though as Harry puts it, "You don't have sex with a thunderstorm"). Harry's fairy General Toot-toot can speak Russian.

Dresden's Mysterious Past: Dresden's mother is actually a McCoy and is Ebenezar's daughter, thus making Ebenezar Dresden's maternal grandfather. Margaret LeFay left a powerful gift with the Leanansidhe, a gem which fits into his pentacle, containing her extensive knowledge of all the methods to navigate the Ways. We also learn that the entity on the other side of the Nevernever from Harry's house is the Leanansidhe, and she has been protecting him from those who would try to attack him from the Nevernever for a very long time.

Dresden's Mysterious Future: Throughout the course of the book, Harry occasionally hears Cassius's voice saying "Die Alone." In reference to the curse he laid on Harry during the events of Dead Beat. At the end of the book a female's voice is heard telling the voice to "Hush now".

The Knights of the Cross: Michael Carpenter is still retired. Susan and Murphy became pro-tem members during the battle against the Reds. Harry offered Murphy the full-time position of wielding Fidelacchius once more, but she is undecided.

The War: No longer enjoying a lull. Harry's actions during the course of the battle against the Red Court ultimately resulted in the complete and utter destruction of every Red Court Vampire in existence. Half-vampires lost their half-vampire side and powers, becoming fully human again. As a result, every former half-vampire became their true age again, killing off many of the older half-vampires and withering many who had been alive for a long time but not long enough to expire in human years.

The Fellowship of St. Giles: The Fellowship and its support structure are supposedly almost completely wiped out by the Red Court due to Martin's treachery, but when the Red Court is annihilated it seems as if the reverse is true. In addition, the vampiric portions of the Fellowship's curse are wiped away, leaving the survivors whole and human; however, the survivors also aged accordingly. This means that anyone who had been a partial Red Court Vampire for more than their natural lifespan aged and died quickly after the ritual was completed.

The Blue Beetle: Harry's Volkswagen Beetle is apparently totally destroyed. Also, his home is completely destroyed by arson. Harry breaks his back escaping the fire; it is the "cure" for this injury that requires him to take up as the Winter Knight.

List of characters

Returning characters

Many major characters who have appeared in a Dresden Book has a least a cameo appearance here. Notable in their lack of appearance are the Alphas, Harry's werewolf friends. At the end of the previous novel, Harry explained things in full to their leader Billy, making it appear he would have a larger role in later novels. This list primarily notes characters who had an important role or changed as a result of this book.

  • Harry Dresden: The protagonist and a professional wizard—he loses his office, home, and car during the course of the book as well as becoming the Winter Knight and killing two people in cold blood.
  • Sergeant Karrin Murphy: Detective Sgt. and former head of Special Investigations. At the end of the book, she is under investigation and looks likely to take early retirement. She may take up Fidelacchius and become a Knight of the Sword.
  • Mister: Dresden's 30+ pound house cat. Missing at the end of the book.
  • Mouse: Dresden's Tibetan Temple dog. Mouse speaks to Harry and the others while they are transformed into hounds by Leanansidhe.
  • Bob: A spirit of intellect who resides inside a skull in Dresden's sub-basement laboratory.
  • Molly Carpenter: Michael and Charity's eldest child; Harry's apprentice. She soulgazes Thomas during the story and has become protective of him.
  • Thomas Raith: A White Court vampire, Harry's half-brother, and favorite of Lara Raith (effective head of the White Court).
  • Ebenezar McCoy: White Council Senior Wizard, Blackstaff, head of the unofficial Grey Council, revealed to be Harry's grandfather.
  • Susan Rodriguez: Red Court half-vampire and Harry's former lover. Revealed to be the mother of their daughter, Maggie. Killed by Harry to destroy the Red Court.
  • Martin: Red Court half-vampire and a member of the Fellowship of St. Giles for over 100 years. Revealed as a Red Court agent within the Fellowship, appears to betray Dresden and Susan in the battle at Chichen Itza.
  • Leanansidhe: Winter Court sidhe and Harry's Godmother.

New characters

  • Margaret Angelica Dresden: eight-year-old daughter of Harry and Susan. Raised by a family in Mexico, kidnapped by the Red Court, and nearly killed. Entrusted to Father Forthill by Harry to hide.
  • Agent Tilly: FBI agent investigating Harry, disbelieves Harry when he, Murphy, and Susan explain the Red Court to him, but sees the attack on the FBI's building in Chicago. Harry calls him "Slim".
  • Donar Vadderung: the one-eyed CEO of Monoc Securities. Revealed as Odin (was hinted at being him several times in past stories).
  • The Eebs: Esteban and Esmeralda Batiste, a husband and wife team of Red Court vampires used by the Red King for assassinations. Deceased.
  • Steven Douglas: "Stevie D", hitman, hired to kill Dresden by the Eebs.

Aftermath, Ghost Story and beyond

Harry's story will continue in Aftermath, told from Karrin Murphy's point of view and running from roughly forty five minutes after the end of Changes. The story will be released as part of Side Jobs, a collection of Dresden shorts due for release in late summer or early autumn of 2010.

Jim Butcher has already signed for a thirteenth Dresden novel, tentatively listed as Ghost Story on his official forums, and confirmed by Butcher at several signings (his publishers wouldn't let him call it the more prosaic Dead). He has also confirmed that Changes marks the midpoint of Harry's story and there will be at least 7 more books, possibly 10, to finish Harry's story. In addition, despite the previous books playing out in more or less real time, with the elapsed time between books approximately equaling the time between their release dates, Ghost Story has been confirmed as taking place immediately after the conclusion of Changes, though Butcher has also equated the immediate jump to Ghost Story as being akin to the Back to the Future series time jumps, implying that what seems to be happening within moments of the end of Changes may actually be happening over a much longer timespan.
