Torchic (known in as アチャモ Achamo in Japan, Flemmli in Germany and Poussifeu in France) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. It is one of the three Hoenn starter Pokémon (the other two are Treecko and Mudkip).
The name Torchic comes from a combination of the words torch and chick (or baby chicken).
Biology
Torchic is incredibly cute and playful, and is covered all over by a fluffy coat of down. In any given natural environment, Torchic dislikes darkness because it is unable to see its surroundings, regardless of its proficiency with fire techniques. Torchic sticks with its Trainer, following behind with unsteady steps. It has a place inside its body that contains super-heated fire, allowing it to give literal 'warm hugs' to its trainers. This trait also serves as its "ammunition" in battles. If attacked, it strikes back by spitting balls of fire over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit that it forms in its stomach, oftentimes leaving the foe scorched black.
In the video games
Picking this Pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium-Hard" difficulty level because the first gym leader uses Pokémon whose types make them very resistant to Torchic's fiery moves. However, Torchic is the only Fire-type Pokémon available between Littleroot Town (where trainers receive it) and Fiery Path. Plus, the third gym leader (which is before Fiery Path) uses some steel-type Pokémon which are easily beaten by fire-type attacks.
This Pokémon can learn some moves bird pokémon learn, and these moves are Peck, Mirror Move, and Aerial Ace (by Technical machine). However, as it evolves into a Fighting-type Pokémon it doesn't learn any more similar attacks.
In the Anime
In the Pokémon anime, May chose Torchic as her starter because she considered it to be cute. Her young Torchic is very playful and fun, even though it's not her strongest battle Pokémon.
It later evolves into Combusken to defend the group against a mob of angry Breloom.
