Anthem (Chess Song) is

Anthem, is the last song of Act I of the musical Chess. Like One Day More of Les Miserables and Defying Gravity of Wicked, Anthem can be considered the signature song of the musical.

In the Song, it is sung by Anatoly Sergievsky, the Russian competitor of the world chess championships. In the context of the musical, Sergievsky has just been made a British citizen, after escaping from his homeland, the USSR. He sings to the audience that the only borders of his land, lie around his heart.

There have been numerous cover versions of the song. Tommy Körberg, the actor who played the Russian on the original cast recording, has given numerous performances of the song, so has Michael Ball. Josh Groban has released the song as part of one of his albums, and performed it at the Royal Variety Performance, aswell as playing the Russian at the Chess in Concert event at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008. Liam Fox, who went on the play the American in the 2010 UK Tour of the musical, sung the song at the 2009 Concert for Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall with Katherine Jenkins.
