The burden of proof is on editors adding/restoring material. I'm glad to see you provide a reference for the claim (JLDS before, during and after my membership made dubious claims about its history) -- but, "it stays unless you disprove it" is the exact opposite of how Wikipedia operates. --EEMIV (talk) 18:52, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't saying one can just add material he believes is true without a source and expect it to stay. But what you did was remove sourced material until it was verified by "a third party" when no such verifying third party exists on the topic. Omnibus (talk) 19:08, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The claim about the Jefferson Society was "sourced" to the Society's web site -- given that it is a superlative claim about the Society's longevity, the source has a conflict of interest and it was inappropriate to cite at Wikipedia. And as you demonstrated a bit later, the University has substantiated the claim (still dubious given that JLDS is part of UVa, but sufficiently removed for the time being). You can probably find more information in Mr. Jefferson's University by Virginius Dabney. If a third-party source doesn't exist for something, then the claim should not be included. --EEMIV (talk) 19:22, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the entity making the claim. If I could reference something extremely notable from the MIT website about the school, and there was no third-party source that disagreed (and no third-party source that agreed) it would be, and is, worthy of being on Wikipedia. There are numerous examples of this on many university pages. But, the Jeff Society is not MIT... I didn't know about their supposed "reputation for lying" until you told me... just another reason the Wash is the superior society I suppose.
