Steve Addazio

Steve Addazio is an American football coach, formerly serving as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach of the University of Florida Gators football team.

Addazio had been coaching the Florida Gators with Urban Meyer for Meyer's entire tenure at the University and has been part of two BCS National Championship Game wins during that time period.

Biography

Addazio was a four-year starter at Central Connecticut State from 1978–81 and earned tryouts with the NFL's New England Patriots, USFL's Jacksonville Bulls and CFL's Ottawa Roughriders. He earned his Bachelor's (1981) and Master's (1985) Degrees from Central Connecticut State.

Addazio was the head coach of Cheshire High School in Connecticut from 1988–1994 He put over 20 student athletes into college football programs. He led Cheshire to 34 consecutive victories, the second longest streak in the nation. Cheshire also won 4 consecutive state titles and was ranked in the Top 25 nationally under Addazio.[1]

Starting in 1995, Addazio moved up to the college football ranks and had stints as a position coach with Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Indiana. During the 2004 season he was offensive coordinator at Indiana during Gerry DiNardo's last season.[1] After the season, Addazio joined Meyer's staff at Florida. Addazio and Meyer had previously coached together at Notre Dame during the 1999 and 2000 seasons under head coach Bob Davie.

Florida head coach Urban Meyer promoted Addazio to Offensive Coordinator from Offensive Lines Coach/Assistant Head Coach on December 27, 2008. He followed Dan Mullen, who was hired as head coach of Mississippi State earlier that month. Although the announcement of Addazio's promotion occurred in December, Mullen stayed with the football team through the Jan. 8th Gators' 24–14 BCS Championship victory over the Oklahoma Sooners.[2] It has since been revealed that Syracuse University was considering the hiring of Addazio as head coach for their football team at the time of the promotion to offensive coordinator.[3]. When Urban Meyer took a leave of absence during the 2009 season, prior to the bowl game, Addazio was name the Interim Head Coach [4], hiring several new coaches, keeping the program together and managing to be named the 2009 Recruiter of the Year [5].
