Wikipedia:Files for upload

Welcome to Files for Upload, part of WikiProject Articles for creation. This process was created to allow unregistered users to add new files to Wikipedia with the assistance of experienced Wikipedians. If you would like to upload an image yourself, you can create an account and after four days and 10 edits you will be autoconfirmed and able to upload files. However, please consider uploading free files over at Wikimedia Commons (guide here).

Reviewing requests

If you are an experienced editor, then you can help out by reviewing requests. Make sure you're familiar with Wikipedia's policies on non-free content (or simplified version). Learn about Wikipedia's various copyright tags. Read the guide on how to review file upload requests. Note that this page's editnotice contains an expandable cheat sheet with all the templates used in reviewing requests. After uploading the file tag its talk page with {{subst:WPAFCF}}. Remember to subst all templates. Notify the requester at their talk page using {{subst:ffu talk}} ~~~~ whenever you act on their request. You are responsible for anything you upload, so make sure you are comfortable that the file satisfies Wikipedia's policies first. If the file is non-free, then you must insert the file in the appropriate article right away in order to comply with the non-free content criteria.

However if you can upload a higher quality image it email it to me, it could be proved to be genuine enough. • Is there a bigger copy of this? This is nearly too small to read. I assume you want it on Victory Christian School, but there is a seal already uploaded by you at commons. Stephen Tobolowsky image

Description: This is an image of Stephen Tobolowsky. There isn't any pictures of him on his Wikipedia page at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Tobolowsky and I thought it would be appropriate to have on there since he is a famous actor that has worked in over 200 projects in film and television. The image is from his IMDB page. Which is here: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3359149568/nm0864997 At the bottom of the page it says "Photo by Lucasfilm – © 1994" But I have seen this exact image on hundreds of websites so I assume it is fair use? I don't know a lot about copyright laws, that's the main reason I am submitting a request.

    • In this case the best thing would be for you to take the picture yourself. You can upload to flickr with a cc-by-sa license or email an image to me to upload. Otherwise there are more complications if others took the photo, and yet others own the copyright as far more facts need to be proved. A free license needs to be something like CC-BY-SA-3.0 or public domain, and permission to use on Wikipedia is not suitable. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:17, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
      • The guy has been on so many TV shows and films, it's like literally impossible there isn't an image somewhere we can't put on his page that won't mess with copyrights...         • The problem with TV and films is that people almost always do this for money, so they are not giving their pictures away for free.             • Follow the procedure at WP:IOWN, t is much simpler if you take the picture your self. If you get the copyright owner to register here and upload an image that has not been published before, then that is a fairly simple way to go too. Your license page says it can only be used for personal use and not for commercial use. We need images to be available for all uses here. The image is probably too new for it to be public domain. It would, but then you have to prove that the image is public domain, where and when was it first published, who was the photographer? Since he died only about 60 years ago, it is quite possible that the photographer copyright still persists. Can you prove the image is over 100 years old? • I'm sorry, but the place that you linked to specifically says "this image is copyright and all reserved to akki." Therefore we cannot use it except as fair use, and we can not use as fair use images of living people. Also, on a related note, I'm not sure what the destination article for this image is. I have to assume, based off of the fact the the image is in color and of a child, that the person is more than likely alive. If you can demonstrate that this person is not alive, we might be able to use this under fair use, but only under specific conditions. (Specificly, if he was notable for something he did as an adult, we would rather have an image of him as an adult as a fair use image, since we can really only use fair use images sparingly.) • Thanks for responding. the uploader may not have cared, but at Wikipedia we are trying to comply with the law, which says that a copyright license has to be granted in writing.
