The Olympus PEN E-PL2, announced in early January 2010 at the CES, due for release later the same month.
(At the time of writing this article, the camera has not been released - please consult the Olympus product home page[1] for the E-PL2 for the most accurate information available. Note that even the Olympus page is self-contradictory at this time- the Overview page states the camera has a built-in flash, the Specification page says the Built-in flash is 'not available'.)
This will be the Olympus Corporation's fourth camera that uses the Micro Four Thirds mount after the Olympus PEN E-P1, Olympus PEN E-P2 and Olympus PEN E-PL1.
At the time it was announced, it had a US dollar MSRP of $599.99.
As for earlier PEN models, the E-PL2 is again aimed in between the point-and-shoot (compact camera) and D-SLR markets - an evolution in terms of functionality.
Noteworthy changes from the Olympus PEN E-PL1 model include:
- Arguably slightly improved in-body Image Stabilisation (IS) at 4EV equivalent.
- Bulb (long exposure) with cable-release option (RM-UC1 remote cable) up to 30m
Differences that are not yet clear:
- presence of an accelerometer / orientation (lacking in the E-PL1)
