Brendon James Egan (born 17 December, 1984, in Christchurch, New Zealand is a New Zealand sports writer for The Southland Times newspaper in Invercargill.

He has been the beat writer for the Southern Steel netball and Southland Sharks basketball franchises since 2009. His other main rounds are motorsport, football and hockey.

In 2010, Egan was named the National Basketball League's writer of the year and was a finalist in the young sports writer of the year award at the Sir Terry McLean sports journalism awards in Auckland.

He has achieved notoriety for his quirky updates during sporting games via Twitter, his coverage of issues, which fall outside the main realms of sports journalism, such as religion and sport and his colourful writing style.

Egan is a graduate of the University of Canterbury where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in English and Mass Communication. He also completed a post-graduate diploma in Journalism through the University of Canterbury.

Egan began his sports journalism career at The Oamaru Mail, where he worked from 2008 to midway through 2009 and achieved prominence for his indepth coverage of local cricket.

He is an old boy of St Bede's College in Christchurch. His love of sports journalism developed in the backyard as a child, where he would boot a ball about for hours, while commentating on the action and then retiring inside to write up elaborate match reports.

According to his Facebook page, he is a Arsenal F.C.football fan and enjoys the music of Oasis, U2, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Pearl Jam.
