Jessica Valenti is a blogger and feminist writer from New York City. She is the founder and Executive Editor of the feminist blog Feministing.com. Valenti received her master's degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University,[1] has blogged for NARAL Pro-Choice America,[2] and has worked as a freelance contributor for Ms. magazine.[3] Her work has been featured in The Guardian,[4] The Nation,[5] TPMCafe,[6] and Alternet.[7]

Feministing

Valenti and Feministing are frequently identified as part of the third-wave feminist movement.[8]

Valenti founded Feministing in 2004, as a source for feminist news and ideas "by and for" young feminists.[9] It was created while Valenti was working at the National Organization for Women's legal defense fund, in response to what she felt was dismissal from older feminists.[10][11]

Valenti and Feministing have been one center of feminist debate online. Valenti was, for example, the center of a vitriolic dispute in the blogosphere when law professor Ann Althouse accused[12] her of drawing attention to her figure with a "three quarter pose" while posing for a picture with President Bill Clinton.[13][14]

Valenti left Feministing on February 2, 2011. She said that she wanted Feministing to "remain a place for younger feminists to build their careers and platforms." [15] She will continue to write on her blog[16], available on her website, JessicaValenti.com.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). We Don't Need Another Wave[17] and Single State of the Union.[18] She has written as a freelancer for Ms. magazine,[3] Salon, The Guardian (UK), The Nation, Alternet, The Scholar & Feminist and Guernica.[citation needed]

Valenti's first book, Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters, was published by Seal Press in early 2007. To promote her book, she was interviewed by Liberal Oasis,[19] Alternet,[9] New York Magazine,[20] Salon.com[21] and The Colbert Report.[22] In May 2008, Valenti published her second book He's a Stud, She's a Slut...And 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know.[23] Valenti released her third book, The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession With Virginity is Hurting Young Women in March 2009.

Personal life

Valenti attended Stuyvesant High School. On October 3, 2009, Valenti married Andrew Golis, the deputy publisher of Talking Points Memo.[24]

On August 15, 2010, Valenti gave birth to a baby girl named Layla Sorella Valenti-Golis. Layla was delivered at 29 weeks by emergency c-section after Valenti was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome.
