Nan Hua High School (Chinese: 南华中学) is a secondary school in Clementi, Singapore. The school is operated by the Ministry of Education. It is the tenth Special Assistance Programme (SAP) school in Singapore, in which both English and Chinese are the first languages. The school was founded in 1917 and it celebrated its ninetieth anniversary in 2007.

Heritage

The early twentieth century was a time when education was gaining prominence in Singapore. But at that time, few girls were given the privilege of enjoying an education. It was with the aim of providing girls in Singapore with the opportunity of receiving an education that Nan Hwa Girls' School (NHGS) was established by an overseas Chinese, Mr Xiong Shangfu, on 14 June 1917.

NHGS had a very humble beginning in a makeshift school in Coleman Street. From less than 100 Chinese girls, the school population grew rapidly and soon there was a need for a bigger school to accommodate the growing numbers. In the ensuing years, plans went underway and the new school building in Bencoolen Street was ready in 1921.

However, a new problem cropped up in 1924 and this time, the school was forced to close temporarily due to financial problems. After a series of public appeals, generous contributions of funds enabled the debts to be settled and the school re-opened.

By 1928, the Basic Teacher Training Programme had started and the student population was still booming, leading to a space constraint again. A second move had to be initiated to make room for the students. In 1941, the new school building at Adis Road was ready. It began the Main School catering for normal training classes for teachers and primary classes. The old building at Bencoolen Street functioned as the Branch School, for primary classes only. In that same year, tragedy struck when the Japanese invaded Singapore. The school at Adis Road was turned into the headquarters for the Japanese Imperial Army and forced to close again.

School Song
Years it takes to build a nation,
strive we to this end with valour always.
Nurtured we from childhood through our youth,
finest essence spread we all our days.
Loving, loyal, filial, upright, courteous be.
Patient, tolerant and humble we shall be.
Work together each dutifully,
forward to the future eagerly.

In October 1945, the school re-opened after the return of the Allied forces. The School Management Committee (SMC) immediately set out to raise funds to rebuild the school and enrol students. Due to the overwhelming financial support of many parents, secondary classes were also set up and the enrolment rose to 700. The school's name was officially changed to Nan Hwa Girls' High School (NHGHS) by the SMC in 1956.

It was during this period that the curriculum underwent much restructuring and NHGHS emerged as one of the premier girls' schools in Singapore. The Branch School led by Mdm Gao Jingming was transformed totally into a primary school, leaving the main School as the secondary school when it terminated the intake of primary pupils in 1964.

A third move took place on 12 December 1982 when the school moved from Adis Road to Clementi Avenue 1 upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Education. A momentous change took place in 1984 when the school began to admit Secondary One boys. It was a significant event and to reflect it, the school changed its name to Nan Hua Secondary School (NHSS).

Another significant change took place on 1 April 1986. The SMC handed over the administration of the school to MOE, thus ending its long-standing status as an aided school.

In the new millennium, Nan Hua Secondary School joined the ranks of Singapore's Special Assistance Plan Schools as the 10th SAP school. Under PRIME, the school was relocated to 41 Clementi Avenue 1 on 20 December 2003. The school attained the School of Distinction Award and Singapore Quality Class (SQC) in 2005. The new school building was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 17 July 2005, when he also declared Nan Hua Secondary School achieving its Autonomous Status in 2006. With MOE's approval, the name of the school was changed to Nan Hua High School with effect from 1 January 2006.
