Srđan Ognjanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Срђан Огњановић) has been the principal of Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade since 2008.[1] He received his degrees in the field of Mathematical Sciences from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Belgrade, in Belgrade, Serbia, former Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. Prior to that, Mr Ognjanović was a student of Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade, from which he graduated in 1972, in A-division [2].
Professional career
Mr Ognjanović started his professional career as a teacher of mathematics at Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade (Serbian: "Matematička Gimnazija") while still a student of mathematics at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Belgrade, continued his career after graduation also in Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade, and devoted his career to teaching mathematics in the same school, now being a professor in Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade for more than 30 years.
Texbooks and awards
Mr Ognjanović is the author of numerous books and collections of problems for elementary and secondary schools, as well as special collections of assignments for preparation for mathematics competitions and mathematics workbooks used as a preparation for admission to faculties. [3]
Among latest awards for his published works Mr Ognjanović received (in 2010): Grand Prize at 16th International Book Fair, in Novi Sad, from a Business Chamber of Vojvodina [4], and "Stojan Novaković" Prize for the best textbook and set of textbooks published by Zavod - Serbian State Company of Textbooks.[5]
International competitions and awards
Students od professor Ognjanović won numerous prizes at International Science Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Earth Sciences, also at other prestigious competitions around the world, and, accordingly, won many full scholarships at top-ranked universities.[6][7]
USA and UK universities acceptance
In 2010, Trinity College of University of Cambridge, awarded 7 full scholarships to 7 pupils from a Special Division (Division D, or 4-d Division) of Mathematical Gymnasium, namely to students Luka Milićević, Dušan Milijančević, Ognjen Ivković, Nikola Mrkšić, Mihajlo Cekić, Aleksandar Vasiljković and Dušan Perović.[8][9][10] This is the first time in history of Cambridge that 7 full scholarships were granted not only to one division, not only to one school, not only to one city and not only to one state, but also the first time that this large number of scholarships was awarded to one world region (e.g. North America or Europe are two regions). Also this year, a former pupil, Ivana Milović, was awarded a full scholarship from Trinity College for master studies in mathematics.[11] All of the named students were, in some part of their education at Mathematical Gymnasium Belgrade, students of professor Ognjanović.
More pupils from MG were accepted to Cambridge, but there were no more full scholarships. Other students received scholarships from MIT and other UK and USA faculties and universities.[12][13][14]
In 2010 more than 40 students of professor Ognjanović won scholarships for Oxbridge, Ivy League, and other top USA and European universities.
