The Woods Coffee is a regional chain of coffeehouses based in Washington State. The company currently has 10 locations throughout Whatcom County.

Brief History

The Woods Coffee was established by the Herman family of Lynden, Washington. With a dream of starting a chain of coffee shops, the Herman family pooled their talents and resources to create the first store on Bender Road in Lynden in 2002[1]. After six months, they opened their second store, also in Lynden. Since then, they have continued on a steady growth pattern throughout Whatcom County, opening stores in Bellingham, Ferndale and Birch Bay, with many different members of the family involved in all aspects of the business to this day.

In January 2011, The Woods Coffee opened their own bakery and introduced their line of in-house baked goods, including sandwiches and bakery products[2]. Previously, the company sold baked goods from other local merchants.

Locations

The Woods Coffee's first coffee shop was opened near Bender Fields in Lynden, Washington. That coffee shop is still open today, and it was later joined by two other Woods Coffee shops in Lynden: one on the Guide Meridian, adjacent to Safeway, and the second in the Fairway Shopping Center, on Front Street.

Expanding into Bellingham

The Woods Coffee later opened several locations in Bellingham, the first of which is near the King Street exit, off of Interstate-5. The second Bellingham location The Woods Coffee opened is on Bakerview Road. The third Bellingham location, and The Woods Coffee's highest grossing location, is on the waterfront at Boulevard Park [3].

Shortly thereafter, the Woods Coffee opened it's seventh location, at the site of the former Malt Shop in downtown Bellingham, on the corner of Railroad and Chestnut Streets.

Ferndale

The Woods Coffee opened their first location in Ferndale, and their eight location in total, in 2008. The coffee shop is a two-story building, located just off Main Street, near Sonic Drive-In.

Birch Bay

The Woods Coffee's ninth location opened up in Birch Bay in 2009, after Starbucks backed out of their plans to open a coffee shop in the space [4]. The Birch Bay Woods Coffee location is in the Birch Bay Square shopping center.

Additional Bellingham Expansion

The Woods Coffee opened the doors of their tenth location in 2011, their second in downtown Bellingham. The coffee shop, which sits at intersection of Bay and Prospect Streets, is located in the ground floor of the historic Flatiron Building, below the Logos Bible Software offices, and it represents the Woods Coffee's largest location to date.

In April 2011, the Woods Coffee announced their plans for an eleventh location, in the former Tully's Coffee space on the Guide Meridian in north Bellingham. The store is scheduled to open by the 4th of July[5].
