Sasural Genda Phool is a unique show that falls into the category of a soap opera, romantic comedy and a drama. It is currently aired on Star Plus and premiered on March 1, 2010. Sasural Genda Phool is set in the colourful alleys of Old Delhi and mixes up life’s different flavours. The aesthetic portrayal of Purani Dilli is the USP of the show. It is a copy of a popular Bengali show ‘Ogo Bodhu Shundori’ which airs on Star Jalsha.

Story

This story is about two very different people, Ishaan and Suhana, living in Delhi, India. Suhana Bajpai is a rich man's daughter who grew up getting everything she wished for. Her mother died when Suhana and her sister Sanjana were very young. Her father always gave her whatever she asked for. She has a very fiery temper and takes it out by throwing glasses and plates. She grew up with her father and sister in a big house, having servants who were there for her every need. She is also very kind and innocent, and is not afraid to speak the truth when the situation demands.

Ishaan Kashyap was born, grew up in, and lives in the Chandi Chowk area. He grew up in a middle class joint family. Ishaan's family is big and jovial. Everybody in his family pitches in for the household expenses. Ishaan is a simple boy working as a software engineer for a private firm. Surprisingly, for a guy whose career is on the rise, he doesn't have a girlfriend and never did. Ishaan is the youngest of the three brothers, and they often make fun of him for his simple nature.

Now it is time for both of them to get married. Ishaan gets rejected by many girls, so he just asks his family to choose a suitable girl for him to marry. Meanwhile, Suhana is dating Sid, a model. Suhana and Ishaan have met eachother a couple of times, but the situations led to disasters. Suhana asks Sid to marry her, but he rejects her saying that she is "just not marriage material." Suhana is heartbroken and later upset. She decides to marry whoever her dad chooses for her to prove to Sid that she is indeed marriage material. One day, Suhana's father's car runs into Ishaan's scooter by accident and he falls off of it. Her father takes him back home and meets his family. He decides to get Suhana married into that family after seeing the love that everyone has for one another. Thus, Ishaan and Suhana are wed.

But even before the couple is married, it starts on a disastrous note. When Suhana is about to put the flower garland around Ishaan (who saw her picture and is already in love with her), she sees Ishaan's face and faints.She rememebrs him and knows that his family is middle class. However the marriage resumes. On their suhaag raat, Suhana tells Ishaan that she does not love him, then says that she thought that her father chose for her a rich, smart, handsome boy but instead chose Ishaan. Ishaan, heartbroken, goes to his special crying place and cries all night. He returns the day after and finds Suhana still there. Suhana decides to stay to make Sid regret dumping her. Suhana feels suffocated in her sasural. She tells her father that he ruined her life. Radha Bua overhears this and tells Badi Maa.

Time passes and Suhana develops love for her sasural. She tells Ishaan she will never leave this house because she loves everyone and can't live without them. However, she still thinks that she doesn't love Ishaan, and they are just "official" husband and wife, and that's it. Badi Maa and Dadaji find out about this, and make a plan to help Suhana realize her love for Ishaan.

Ishaan's childhood friend, Sonali, is invited over to make Suhana jealous and realize that she loves Ishaan. After many disasters, the plan works and Suhana confesses her love for Ishaan infront of everyone, and Sonali goes home. Ishaan and Suhana go to Goa for their honeymoon. Suhana and Ishaan return from their honeymoon and are enjoying life with their relatives in an extended family. They throw a surprise party for Ishaan's parents' anniversary. Meanwhile, after losing his job, Panna's husband Raunak leaves her and his family. He does this so that he can become stable and get a high paying job again. At this time, Deepak also comes to stay with his family forever having settled things with his mother. As time passes in Raunak's absence, the fractured relationship between Panna and her mother-in-law is repaired, leading to the repair in relationship between the Kashyaps and the Sharmas.

When Holi comes up, Suhana faints. The family begins to think she is pregnant but later they find she has a brain tumor. After they get the biopsy results they find it to benign, meaning it can be cured. Suhana has her surgery and is completely healed. Mysterious love letters to an I. Kashyap arrive to Suhana and Rajni. They doubt Ishaan and Inder for their initials are I. Kashyap. They find that their neighbor, Jassi, was having an affair with a girl and was using I. Kashyap as his name, and when their mailbox broke, his game was ruined.

When the problem is solved, Suhana apologizes to Ishaan, and he wants to spend some time with her so he begs Suhana to let him stay home. When she refuses and says he should go to work, Ishaan goes and on his way back, he meets with an accident and hits his head. When he wakes up at the hospital, everyone realizes that he has forgotten the past 2 years of his life meaning he has forgotten his marital life and wedding with Suhana, so he doesn't remember Suhana at all. The doctor working on Ishaan's case tells the family that they can't remind Ishaan of his past and asks them to let him regain his memory naturally with the passage of time for his good health.

Raunak's absence is explained by the incident when he tries to commit suicide and saved by a girl who mistakes him for her husband who deserted her for another woman. Her father is a rich former military officer or senator and out of blind love for his mentally unstable daughter, he forces - almost blackmails - Raunak to stay there. Nonetheless, Raunak repeatedly tries to escape. As it turns out, the doctor treating the girl and the one treating Ishaan are the same. Out of desperation, Raunak tries to get a message to Panna through him, not knowing that the doctor can actually help him as he also treats Ishaan. However, the girl comes in last minute and stops him from telling the doctor he's not her husband.

Ishaan's family can't tell Ishaan about Suhana being his wife. This leads to a lot of hilarious situations where the family explain the presence of Suhana in the household. They have changed her name to Sashikala, and told him that she is Disha's childhood friend, and her husband left her so she is staying here for a few days. Ishaan feels attracted to Suhana, but doesn't know why and Suhana is flirting with him. Bit by bit, Ishaan is starting to regain his memory. Suhana is desperately waiting for the day Ishaan remembers her.

It would not be wrong to say that she is the backbone of Kashyap family because she keeps the family bond together and happy with her loving and caring nature. She has two kids Inder and Panna. Panna is married and lives in her sasural.

Her relationship with her son Deepak, is intriguing. She has a dark past. Her husband sold her to a goon on their wedding night. But, the mother-son relationship grows fonder with time. When Deepak kidnaps the goon who raped her and asks her to shoot him she says she can't because he looks a lot like Deepak and loves him more than she hates his father.

Deepak attempts suicide and in the hospital he learns why his mother cannot look at him. Gradually, the differences between the mother and son are sorted out and Deepak is welcomed in the family.

Ilesh Bhardwaj	Shyam Mashalkar	Ishaan’s cousin brother	He is the son of the daughter of the Kashyap family . He is lazy to the bone and took up a job only after much persuasion by the family members. He loves playing jokes on Ishaan, and jokes about everything no matter how serious. He is married to Disha.
Disha Bhardwaj	Pooja Kanwal	Ishaan’s sister-in-law	She is a school teacher but handles the household responsibilities equally well. She values the family bonds and connects with all the members. She is married to Ilesh.
Panna Raunak Sharma	Moon Banerjee	Ishaan’s cousin elder sister	She is Shailja’s daughter and like her hails great courage and simplicity. Though, married into a super-rich family, she is still well grounded. When Raunak deserts her and his family, she decides to play the man of the house and shoulders the responsibility of looking after Raunak’s parents. Panna's mother-in-law is mean and cruel to her and is even worse to her after Raunak leaves, saying that Panna is the reason that Raunak left. Even when her family tries to persuade her to leave her sasural, she still stays saying that her in laws need her support. Gradually Panna's mother-in-law understands Panna and grows motherly toward her and accepts that this is all Raunak's fault.
Raunak Sharma	Shailesh Gulabani	Ishaan’s brother-in-law	He has a high air about himself and loves Panna. However, he lacks courage and when he loses his job, he is unable to take the pressure and deserts his family.
Ishika Kashyap	Neha Narang	Ishaan’s sister	She is a college student and has a lot of aspirations. Her spiciness makes her a favourite in the house. She likes to look at magazines with film stars and gossip.
Mithi Kashyap	Muskaan Uppal	Ishaan’s niece	She is Rajni and Inder’s daughter and the youngest Kashyap family member. Her CUTE innocence adds colour to the Kashyap family.
