The Covenant of Mayors is a cooperation of communities which committed to climate protection. It is led by the European Commission. The communities' aim is to reduce the use of energy and pushing forward energy efficiency. A concrete aim is to reduce CO2 emissions about 20 per cent by 2030 in their area of responsibility, in addition to the EU's aim. [1].

Members

Member communities are not necessarily situated within EU borders. In the middle of March 2010 has Covenant 1,331 members.[2] It is not known if the counting includes extra-european members as well. Member communities are situated in 37 states within all 27 EU states. Most member communities are situated in Spain (480), Italy (307), France (98) and Sweden (45). Within the 30 biggest cities in the EU 18, within the 50 biggest are 27 cities members.

Non-european cities are Buenos Aires,Argentina and Christchurch, New Zealand. Beside them there are european member cities outside EU. Them are situated in Armenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.[2]
