Plaza Dos de Mayo
The Plaza Dos de Mayo (English: May 2nd Square) is a square located in the Historic center of Lima. It was commissioned by the Peruvian government to commemorate the Battle of Callao which occurred on May 2, 1866. The central monument was constructed in France and arrived in Lima between 1873 and 1874. Upon arrival in Lima, construction was delayed for various months as the monument had to be re-assembled on site. The monument was erected on a square that had previously been known as the Oval of the Queen and previously had been one of the gates of the city. The plaza was inaugurated in 1874. After inauguration, several avenues began surrounding the plaza such as Alfonso Ugarte, Colmena, and Colonial. Buildings of Baron Haussmann[citation needed] influence were popular along these avenues. In the late 20th century a tunnel was constructed under the plaza so as to relieve vehicular congestion.
