School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada (in short SPAV), is a National Resource Institute of India. It is a premier Centrally Funded Technical Institution (CFTI) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. Currently there are 3 SPAs all over India, administered under the MHRD, Government of India. Other than SPAv, the other 2 SPAs are at Delhi and Bhopal.
History
School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada was established on July 7, 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, as an autonomous institution. SPAV is a premier Centrally Funded Technical Institution (CFTI) under the MHRD, for excellence in the fields of Planning and Architecture. Although still in its nascent stage, with experienced faculty and guest lectures by eminent visiting faculty and industry experts from all over the country, the over all quality of education imparted and its focus on research puts SPAV in the league of leading institutes in the country.
At SPAV, the academic focus and approach is a unique blend of design, creativity and objectivity with a social purpose. Students not only learn the skills required, but during the course of studies are exposed to though-provoking and intellectually inspiring sessions, through studios, field trips and research projects, which brings out the creative best in them.
Courses
Currently SPAV offers two under graduate programs:
Undergraduate level
- Bachelor of Planning (4 years)
- Bachelor of Architecture (5 years)
Bachelor of Planning
The 'Bachelor of Planning' is a professional technical course that judiciously trains wards in various aspects of designing, engineering, managing and resolving challenges related to urban human settlements. The Department of Planning offers a 4 year under-graduate programme in planning that is unique in the sub-continent and contextual to modern challenges of urbanisation. The course was envisaged and developed in late 1990s by the Govt. of India to meet the shortage of urban planners in the country.
Bachelor of Architecture
The 5 year under-graduate programme offered by the Department of Architecture, leading to B.Arch degree is a full time architecture programme recognised by the AICTE. It has a broad scope of providing exposure to variety of interests in the field of Architecture and assisting students to discover their own directions for cognitive development. The programme aims at attaining a high level of excellence in architectural design.
Various post graduate and short term certificate programs are proposed to be introduced in the near future. In addition, the Doctoral Program leading to a Ph.D. Degree is being introduced from the academic year 2010-11.
Facilities
Academic Facilities
Apart from regular classrooms, student have access to various studios and well equipped, air-conditioned computer labs for CAD and GIS work with fast computers capable of delivering good graphics. High speed, free internet access through Wi-Fi, anywhere in the campus, helps students stay connected with the world and gather information for their projects and research. While most lectures are in classrooms, certain lectures and presentations are delivered using LCD projectors in lecture halls.
Personal and Social Facilities
Students, at SPAV, are offered decent and affordable on-campus accomodation, throughout their course, by the School. While this accomodation is optional, all students including locals, prefer the School's accommodation.
The Cafetaria serves healthy and hygenic breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea and snacks in the evening with choices of Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian meal plans on specific days and is common to staff and students.
Students are encouraged to take up sports and literary activities in their free time and facilities for the same are provided on the campus.
Annual festivals
Every year the students and administration of SPAV together organize a number of festivals and competitions.
Inyan
Inyan is the annual festival of SPA, Vijayawada. It is held in the month of March every year.
