The Chinese Civil War was the conflict in China between the Kuomintang (the Nationalists) led by Chiang Kai-Shek and the Chinese Communist Party led by Mao Tse-Tung. The conflict began when the Koumintang government attempted to repress the Communist Party. Communist Party activists retreated to the countryside where they fomented a peasant rebellion and established control over several areas in the south of China. Attempts by the Nationalist armies to suppress the rebellion were unsuccessful but extremely damaging to the Communist forces. A decision was made that the bulk of the Peoples Liberation Army would by means of Long March go to northern China. During World War 2 there was a truce during which both parties agreed to suspend fighting to focus their energies against the Japanese.

The conflict restarted after the end of World War 2 and led to ultimate victory by the Communist and the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China and the flight of the Kuomintang to Taiwan.
