Biography

Major General Salaad Gabeyre Kediye was born in September, 15 1934, in the town of Harardhere, situated in the Central Mudug region of Somalia, to an Abgaal family Hawiye clan. In late 1969, following the assassination of Somalia's then president, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, a military government assumed power in a bloodless coup d'état led by Major General Salaad Gabeyre Kediye, General Siad Barre and Chief of Police Jama Korshel. Gabeyre was subsequently named the "Father of the Revolution",and become Minister of Defense while he was in charge of all Somali military affairs, and Barre became the head of the Supreme Revolutionary Council.[1]

A power struggle eventually ensued, between Gabeyre and Siad Barre and in 1972, Gabeyre himself along with two other generals was executed by firing squad by the then new regime.[1]
