Steven Alan ... 'Steven Alan' Grossman is an American fashion designer and founder of the Steven Alan Collection, a heritage-inspired line of men's and women's casual wear. Opening his first boutique in 1994 to curate and retail the works of emerging designers, by 1999 Mr. Alan launched his own line of classic, ready-to-wear essentials, including his now-signature "Reverse Seam" button-down, chinos, and cotton dresses in colorful plaids, stripes and chambray.[1] New York magazine describes the collection as catering to those "looking for edgier versions of traditional garb."[2]

According to his website, "Steven now sells his collections at six eponymous New York stores, and in 2008 introduced three locations in Southern California. The Steven Alan Collection also reaches a global audience, and is now sold in over 300 stores worldwide." On November 11, 2011, Steven Alan opened its fourth West Coast and first San Francisco boutique in Hayes Valley.[3] Mr. Alan has also designed collections for Urban Outfitters (Lark & Wolff), a Japanese line called Blacker, and, more recently, three styles of khakis for Dockers.[4]

On April 29, 2011, the fashion-industry trade journal Women's Wear Daily reported that Steven Alan had sold a minority share in his company to former Fossil, Inc. CEO Tom Kartsotis. [5]
