Maxwell Dlamini is the acting president of the Swaziland National Union of Students. During the so-called "April 12 Swazi Uprising"[1] in April 2011, he and fellow activist Musa Ngubeni was arrested on charges of possession of explosives under Sections 8 and 9 of Swaziland’s Explosives Act 4 of 1961.[2] [3] [4] [5] They were both allegedly tortured,[6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] were subsequently refused bail[13] [14] and remain imprisoned at the Manzini Remand Centre.

An international campaign for their release has been initiated by Danish NGO Africa Contact,[15] [16] [17] British NGO ACTSA,[18] and the British NUS.[19]

Maxwell Dlamini was nominated for the 2013 Student Peace Prize[20] in November 2011.[21] [22] [23] [24]

Maxwell Dlamini and Musa Ngubeni were granted bail on 20. December 2011. Bail was set at 50 000 Rand, by far the highest bail ever in the history of Swazi law.[25] [26] [27] [28]
