Colton Douglas Orr (born March 3, 1982) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player, currently playing in the American Hockey League for the Toronto Marlies.

Playing career

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Orr played for the Swift Current Broncos and the Kamloops Blazers in junior and gained a reputation as a fierce fighter, as his Swift Current coach Brian Dunn put it: "He (Orr) has one of the best right hands I've ever seen". Orr went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins. On November 29, 2005, the New York Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Bruins. Orr scored his first NHL goal in a February 9, 2007, game against the Tampa Bay Lightning's Johan Holmqvist.

On December 31, 2006, Orr was suspended for five games by the NHL for a cross check to the face of Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin in the third period of a December 30 game at Madison Square Garden. Ovechkin was uninjured, but NHL Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell termed Orr's infraction "reckless".[1]

On July 1, 2009, Orr signed a four-year, $4 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Orr would finish the season with a career high 239 penalty minutes. He would also finish with career highs of 4 goals and 6 points.[2]

On January 4th, 2012, Colton Orr was placed on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs, with only 1 and half years left on his contract. He was assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League the next day.[3]

Personal life

Orr is not related to Bobby Orr, although the Hall of Famer has served as his agent.[4] Orr's father, Doug, was a semi-professional basketball player, and his mother, Mollianne, is a health care worker.[4]
