Kongsberg Gruppen ASA[1] (OSE: KOG) (lit.: "The Kongsberg Group") is a Norwegian joint-stock company established in 1987.[2] It is Norway's major defence contractor[3] and maritime automation supplier,[4] and it is located in Kongsberg.
The majority[5] of the company is owned by Norway's government.[6]

History
The company was established in 1814 as Kongsberg Vaabenfabrik (KV) (lit.: "Kongsberg Weapons Factory"), a name which remained virtually unchanged until 1987. It later sold its "civilian activity" due to financial troubles.[citation needed] Kongsberg Gruppen was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1993.
In 1987, the company was part of the Toshiba-Kongsberg affair, which involved a subsidiary of Toshiba — and Kongsberg Vaapenfabrikk. The two companies exported (to the Soviet Union) in violation of the CoCom agreement, technology (Toshiba milling machines and Kongsberg numerical-control computers) that could be used to produce military submarine propellers (with cavitation properties that were less detectable by passive sonar). Providing the USSR with technology that could make their submarines harder to find (and track), was perceived as a significant[citation needed] threat to NATO's security.
In 2011, Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk AS was established with Walter Qvam as chairman.[16] It is not registered as a "state owned company" (statlig eide aksjeselskaper mv) in the same manner that the subsidiaries (and their subsidiaries) of Kongsberg Gruppen are registered with Entity Registry (Norway).[17]
