Average Age Language Development
Newborn Can distinguish different phonemes; Can separate own language from foriegn languages.
4 months Recognize own name sensitive to serial order of words in a sentence; Can separate syllables within words.
7 months Babbling; Starts understanding first words.
10 months Starts babbling only in sounds of own language.
12 months Babbling with stress and intonation of actual speech; produces first words; Starts using words for specific people and objects.
18 months Understands up to 50 words; producing two word sentences.
24 months Starts speaking in multi-word sentences with a clear word order forming; Starts using pronouns.
60 months 6,000 word vocabulary; Produces and understands complex sentences.
