Paul Race is a technical writer, a former English professor, a former History textbook editor and author, a Bible teacher, a former "Jesus Musician," and a web content writer with web sites about about a wide range of topics, including music, Bible, worship, model trains, and Christmas traditions.

I especially like teaching on subjects that are close to my heart, something that I haven't always been free to do as a corporate employee (I worked at least two places where the "politically correct police" could basically get you fired, or at least subject to "re-education programs" for being a Christian). But, one way or the other, there are only a few more years of corporate employment of any kind. And after 32 years of developing resources to support computer companies and the like, I am now planning to develop a family of resources to help transmit my faith and much of what I've learned as a musician, worship leader, and Bible teacher to the next generation.

I started filling in the details on this page because an editor with a quarter of my experience and education recently questioned my qualifications to contribute to a web page on a subject that I literally grew up with. So, I apologize if this page seems a bit like a resume. But still, here is a short list (believe it or not) of some of the things I've done over the years. You can skip it if you like.

Note: If you add all the years up, you'll come to over a century. No, I'm not that old. However, I have spent most of my adult life working two or three jobs at a time, and often taking classes and pursuing some avocation at the same time. Also, if you find yourself wondering why so many different interests seem to be reflected, I could divide the following list easily between things I do or have done for a living (technical writing, accounting, management, computer science) and things I do or have done for love (music, fiction writing, teaching literature, music and Bible, plus a number of hobbies).

Education:

  • BA in English, MA in Composition and Rhetoric from Wright State University
  • M.Div. from Luther Rice Seminary.
  • Other college studies include 1 year each of music theory, vocal performance, and graduate-level accounting, 2 years of program and project management, 2 years of computer science.

Career:

32 years experience as a professional writer, researcher, publisher, and editor, including:

  • 29 years in technology industries, mostly documenting software for Fortune 500 companies.
  • 3 years editing, researching, and writing K-12 History textbooks for 1st-tier publishers.

11 years half-time College teaching, including:

  • 9 years teaching technical writing and advanced technical writing subjects
  • 1 year teaching freshman composition and English literature
  • 1 year teaching Bible, Church History, and Worship

2 years technical training

12 years as a web developer, including several intranets and two internets for Fortune 500 companies and several hobby web pages that have thousands of readers and have earned industry recognition.

Avocations:

  • 42 years as a singer-songwriter, writing and performing folk and Gospel-related music thousands of times in many different venues, including churches, camps, festivals, and coffeehouses; also playing acoustic guitar, saxophone, bass guitar, 5-string banjo, flute, and several other instruments.
  • 31 years teaching adult or young adult Sunday School
  • 16 years as youth director or associate pastor, including frequent pulpit supply in regional churches.
  • 18 years experience as a praise team member
  • 12 years leading contemporary worship services in evangelical churches.
