URBN hotels Shanghai is a boutique hotel located in Jing'an District in Shanghai, China. It is the first carbon neutral hotel in China and was built by the Shanghai-based hotel chain "URBN hotels & resorts".

History

The 26-room boutique hotel is a converted 1970's former post office building. By renovating an existing structure, focusing on using recycled and locally sourced materials such as reclaimed hardwoods and old Shanghai bricks, implementing eco-friendly solutions like passive solar shades and a water based AC system, URBN hotels Shanghai is one of the first examples of how to create a more ecological hotel establishment.

To be able to call URBN hotels Shanghai China's first carbon neutral hotel, it worked with the international intermediary ''South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd'' that offers solutions for companies and industries to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions.

The total amount of energy the hotel consumes, including staff commutes, food and beverage delivery, and the energy used by the guests, is tracked to calculate the carbon footprint. URBN hotels Shanghai then purchases credits to neutralize its footprint by investing in a "green" energy development and emission reduction project in China.

Starting with this hotel as its first property, "URBN hotels & resorts" now has under construction its the second project, also located in Shanghai, next to the World Expo 2010-Site in Pudong District.[1]
