Jack Trimpey and his wife Lois, are the founders and president and vice-president (respectively) of Rational Recovery. He is a pioneer in the manangement of alcoholism and other drug addictions. Although he admits to 25 years of "world class alcholism", he developed the system of self recovery gradually by stubborny refusing to continue drinking. He invented and teaches how to achieve abstinence through books, classes and internet training a method of self recovery known as '. AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique. This method teaches substance abusers to achieve complete abstinence of alcohol and other drugs by psychologically recognizing what he refers to as "The Beast," meaning anything (thought, behavior, etc.) that leads to using alcohol or drugs again. He is the author of Rational Recovery; The New Cure for Substance Addiction. Rational Recovery offers an alternative approach to the epidemic of alcoholism and drug abuse.

Trimpey's methods have been criticized by advocates of Alcoholics Anonymous.
