France Martineau is a canadian linguist, full professor at the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada in both the linguistics department as well as the French department[1] · [2]. She holds a PhD from the University of Ottawa[1]. She is a leader in historical sociolinguistics and a specialist of canadian French.

She presently holds the University Research Chair Langue, identité et migration en Amérique française (Language and Migration in French America).[3]

She has been the director for the project Modéliser le changement : les voies du français, from 2005 to 2010, funded by the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI) of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)[4]. This projet, initiated by France Martineau, has created digitized corpora[5] and has allowed numerous research[6] and conferences[7], renowned the world over, in the field of French historical sociolinguistics.

Professor Martineau is one of the rare researchers to obtain a second MCRI fund[8]. On March 16, 2011 at the University of Ottawa, in the company of renowned guests such as the deputy Royal Galipeau and the President of the university, Allan Roch[9], it was officially announced that Dr. Martineau had been given a 2.5 million dollars research fund for the international and interdisciplinary project Le français à la mesure d'un continent: un patrimoine en partage. Allan Rock insisted on the importance of this project, which will help Canada show its standing as a leader in international research on the French language[10]..

France Martineau is the director of the book collection Voies du français, at the Presses de l'Université Laval (Université Laval Press)[1] · [11], as well as president of the Canadian Linguistics Association since 2011 (vice-president since 2009)[12].

  • In 2004, she received the Professor of the Year award from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa[13].
  • In 2009, she was named one of "16 extraordinary women" at the University of Ottawa[14].
  • In 2009, she obtained the University Research Chair in Language and Migration in French America[15].
  • In 2011, she received funding from the Leaders Opportunity Fund of the Canadian Funds for Innovation (CFI)[16].
  • In 2011, she was elected member of the Royal Society of Canada[17].
