Shaker High School, a public high school in Latham, Albany County, New York, is part of the North Colonie Central School District. As of 2009, it has an enrollment of over 2100 students. In 1985, it was recognized as an Exemplary School by the United States Department of Education, one of the first to receive this distinction.[citation needed] In 2006, it was noted as one of the top 10 high schools in New York, and one of the top 75 in the United States.[citation needed] From 2005-2006 Shaker High School was ranked as the best high school in the Capital Region.

It is part of the North Colonie Central Schools school district, and is fed in part by Shaker Junior High School.

Sports

Shaker's "Blue Bison" sports teams include boys' soccer, basketball, track, Cross Country, golf, ice hockey, wrestling; girls' field hockey, lacrosse; boys' and girls' swimming, diving, gymnastics, tennis, softball, volleyball and football. Both boys' and girls' crew (rowing) is offered as a club sport.

Clubs

There are a huge range of afterschool activities that kids can choose to join at the time at Shaker High School. Most are open to all, while some hold audtions and a select few are secret, highly elite trained clubs. One of these clubs is Puzzle League. First rule of Puzzle League, don't talk about Puzzle League. Stop reading this, now.

Science Research

Shaker High School has started a "University" in the High School Science Research program. In this program, students are offered the opportunity to select a scientific topic and perform original research. In this three-year program, students first gather background information, find a mentor, perform their research, and reach a conclusion based on the results.

The program is run by Biology teacher Nathaniel Covert. A symposium is held in June each year, where Shaker students, teachers, mentors, and parents are welcome.

Courtyards

The school has upper and lower courtyards. The upper is the larger, and has gardens, benches, and picnic tables. Until its closure in 2011 due to excessive littering, it was used frequently by students to spend their lunch time and study hall. However, many students feel it should be reopened, at least during last lunch, due to overcrowding during lunchtime in the cafeterias. The lower courtyard has four walkways connecting the buildings.
