BIO

The feel-good vibe that radiates from The Junction is the sound of three friends playing well together. But the band didn’t necessarily start out with such gentlemanly behaviour: Brent Jackson and Mike Taylor’s first musical meeting was actually a classroom argument about Britpop. After some lively discussions, they soon discovered they were not only obsessed with listening to music, they wanted to see where they could take their passion for playing it.

Seven years and dozens of gigs later, The Junction is a solid trio who have performed live in Canada and the UK with such acts as Bedouin Soundclash, Moneen and The Planet Smashers. Their 2004 EP, And With This Comes Tomorrow, is an optimistic collection of groovy indie rock you can sing, clap and dance along to that sold over 1,000 copies in less than two weeks of its independent release. To celebrate the band’s recent signing to Universal Music Canada, the EP has just been re-released as a teaser for their upcoming full-length debut.

Formed in the suburban communities of Brampton and Mississauga, The Junction started with Brent and Mike (a.k.a. Tip) practising in Mike’s parents’ basement, jamming around with different styles from acid jazz and funk to summery, acoustic-based rock with a variety of guest players. At one high school talent show, an audience member was so inspired that he approached them afterwards and asked to join the band. Matt Jameson received the duo’s approval immediately after he added an innovative bassline to their live staple, “Sunflower.”

The group began to drum up attention from teens and adults alike around the Greater Toronto Area with their regular live shows. “I think the suburbs puts more time into creating a scene and nurturing it,” says Brent. “You get more kids out to the shows because there’s not that much to do!” The Junction’s faithful following is also attracted to music that has a positive energy, as opposed to the typical “hardcore” or “screamo” sound marketed by most bands built in their parents’ suburban basements.

And With This Comes Tomorrow shines with the harmonious, earnest sound Canada’s best new bands are becoming deservedly famous for around the world. But it’s more than just easy, breezy, beautiful. It also rocks. And since the band’s name was partly inspired by Jamiroquai’s track “Function,” so it’s no surprise their songs also have a solid groove. “I think Mike’s father said it best,” explains Brent. “When we started playing, he said, ‘If you do anything in a band make sure you make music that people can dance to.’ That makes so much sense to me now.”

“We’re just a band that loves to love,” he continues. “We love our fans. We love people. We’re really social and honest and it’s good that people support honesty. What the world needs now, and what I see myself being in this band, is trying to get people to hold hands, to lose themselves in a moment and make them feel important.”

The Junction’s And With This Comes Tomorrow is seven songs to bring you gently from summer into a new season, to keep you warm until the new year and the band’s new full-length debut.
