I'm just wondering, are the Melanaus related to the Maranau people of the Philippines? Their names sound so similar to each other. --Fantastic4boy 08:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Re-Write of Melanau
The Melanaus are generally a riverine and coastal living population from the Rejang basin of Sarawak. This particular tribe has no relation whatsoever to the MARANAO of the Philippines. Both are distinct groups, with the latter closely related to the Suluk and Bajau sea going communities of the Sulu Seas.
This Article is inaccurate to say the least and is in need of a clean up.
Hahahahaha.. Tuai just couldn't accept the fact that the Melanaus are actually a subgroup of MALAYS... face it people... Melanaus are actually (or should we say originally)... MALAYS...
Proof that the Melanau are Malays, where is it?
Common language - No
Territory - No
Common Customs - None

The Melanaus are part of the Malay race, but they not ethnic Malays. --210.10.110.202 (talk) 09:30, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
melanau..
I believe that melanau originated from the combination of severals tribes (some have extinct & some of the tribe still exist today in large group). I have no academic/scientific proof. I just believe it like that becuse i noticed that some of melanau's words is similar (and have similar meaning) to some words in several existing tribes in sarawak. Also, the main color of their clothing (black). After some interracial intercourse the new generation of tribe (melanau) leaves the inland kingdom, settled and build a coastal kingdom (Still there is no real proof of the date because they don't have their own writing system).
Melanau have myterious history.... who they really are? Is it true that they once have ruled the central region of Sarawak? Is it true their kingdom collapse after the defeat to Brunei Sultanate? Is there any written manuscript documenting their history? It is interesting how a minority group leads a state and draw the political picture of Malaysia. Maybe it is in their blood. To be the ruler...
But, anything written here still dont have proof. Only a mitos. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.184.244.100 (talk) 09:15, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
In my opinion and base on natural studies we the Melanaus are illanun pirates and most possible by langguage link we are Mindanaos of Meranao grounps. This reasoning is base on the settlement of the Melanaus along the coast of Sarawak especially Belingian,Mukah Oya, Mudan/Igan ,Matu Daro and Rajang. The Bintulu group could only be self claim as Melanau but judging from their language base on their vocal they are more toward the Penans/Kayan/Kenyah language. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.52.110.47 (talk) 05:43, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
List of "Notable/Prominent" Melanaus:
I feel that someone need to edit & shorten this . It's too long and when a lot of names are entered , it will lose its "notable" significance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.135.44.232 (talk) 14:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Possible earliest reference to Melanau
In Negarakretagama, it was claimed that Malano of Nusa Tanjungpura (ancient name of Borneo) was a vassal state of Majapahit Empire.
http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilayah_taklukan_Majapahit
perhaps the etymology of Melanau is inspired or related to this ancient vassal state?
