Willian Borges da Silva, (born 9 August 1988 in Ribeirão Pires), commonly known as Willian, is a Brazilian footballer, currently playing as an attacking midfielder or winger for Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. Willian has also represented Brazil.

Club career

Early career

In 2007, Willian started playing for Corinthians, where he wore the number 10. He scored two goals against Atlético-PR on 2 August 2007.^[1]

Shakhtar Donetsk

On 23 August 2007, he signed a 5-year contract with Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk for £12 million until 30 June 2012.^[2] Since then, Willian has played as a winger for the Donetsk side and scored over a dozen goals. His two goals helped lead Shakhtar past Roma in the UEFA Champions League knockout round, helping the team reach their first UEFA Champions League quarter final. On 23 January 2012, Shakhtar Donetsk confirmed that Chelsea had submitted a bid for Willian. On 7 February, Santos President claimed that Willian was heading to Chelsea in the summer of 2012 after he ruled Santos out of the race in signing him. He said, "We gave up because of a proposal that they [Shakhtar] received from Chelsea. It was an offer of tens of millions of euros. It seems that he will go there in the middle of the year." The potential move would see Willian link up with several other Brazilians with the likes of David Luiz, Ramires and Lucas Piazon all playing at Chelsea.

International career

As a member of the U-20 Brazil team, he made his debut in U-20 South-American Championship against Chile on 7 January 2007, which Brazil went on to win. In 2007, he was also selected for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, but Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Spain. Willian made his senior debut for Brazil on 10 November 2011 in a friendly game against Gabon.
