Edinburgh Global Partnerships, or EGP, is a student-run charity based at the University of Edinburgh that assists in community-led development projects in Africa, Asia and South America. In 2009, EGP raised £68,605.00[1] which brings the total contribution by EGP volunteers to international community-led projects between 2005 and 2009 at £282,822.00 and an estimated £1 million since its existence.

History

EGP was founded as a society at the University Edinburgh by student Benjamin Carey in 1990 and subsequently achieved charity status (SC018757) later that year. EGP was originally called H.E.L.P. (Scotland) standing for "Humanitarian Education & Long-term Projects. Since then, EGP has raised over £1 million in its 22 year history.

EGP's stated constitutional goals are[2] :

  • To support community led initiatives, working together with people to help them achieve their long-term goals for development.
  • To allow volunteers to develop new skills and a wider perspective on the world we live in.
  • To promote international understanding through projects that are focussed on building friendship, trust and respect between EGP volunteers and people across the world.
  • To encourage a more long-term commitment to volunteering by promoting volunteering in Edinburgh.

In March 2012, the charity was awarded a "Global Society Star" Award by EUSA in recognition of their work to the "global experience on campus, in the local community, and abroad".[3]. EGP was also featured in the NIDOS March 2012 Newsletter. [4]

Projects

During the year, EGP accepts project proposals from NGOs which are then assessed according to criteria set by EGP. EGP only accepts proposals that have been made by a community, based on a self assessment of their needs. EGP does not initiate projects in host communities. The Project Researcher works with all NGOs during the selection process to clarify any questions pertaining to the proposal before the committee meet to select successful projects. The process occurs over a number of weeks in September and October. Any projects which are not successful receive advice and assistance from the Project Researcher on how to improve.

Successful projects work with the Project Manager and Project Coordinators to monitor and solve problems which might occur before the beginning of project.

All the money fundraised by volunteers goes to the project and all personal expenses are covered by the individual volunteer. In 2012, EGP volunteers participated in the Meadows Marathon as a fundraising activity for 2012 projects.[5] [6]

During the year, EGP volunteers participate in Edinburgh Links projects. These projects are located in and around Edinburgh and are designed to engage EGP volunteers with local community projects before becoming involved with their host communities abroad.

UK Partners

EGP is a member of the Network of International Development Organisations in Scotland (NIDOS)[7]. They are also part of the Student Volunteering Overseas Partnership (SVOP) which includes InterVol, Oxford Development Abroad (ODA), Student Volunteering Abroad (SVA) Glasgow and Bristol Volunteers for Development Abroad (BVDA).[8]
