The Broodmother, or Black Arachnia, is a fictional character and a player character appearing in the Defense of the Ancients (commonly known as DotA) custom scenario for Blizzard Entertainment's real-time strategy computer game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, which is the official expansion pack to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The character has been created by IceFrog.

Background

The Broodmother is an oversized female spider which is an expert in weaving webs and was, once, a queen of the Nerubians, a large community of creatures belonging to multiple species. Those she ruled feared her, but she fell in love with the Nerubian Assassin, an oversized-scarab renegade assassin called Anub'arak, and was banished from her own kingdom due to this reason. She bears offspring of the Nerubian Assassin as a symbol of her undying love. She is affiliated with "The Scourge," which is one of the two opposing player teams in Defense of the Ancients, the other being "The Sentinel."

Powers and abilities

The Broodmother possesses the following special skills, which get progressively stronger, as the player can upgrade them:

  • She can sow the seeds of her offspring into an enemy. If the target is killed by the injection, spiderlings tear out of the target's corpse.
  • She can weave webs which, when she is hidden in them, grant her invisibility, regenerate her life force and increase the speed at which she moves.
  • She can passively and permanently make her bites inject into her target venom which temporarily reduces the speed at which the target moves and the target's ability to launch strikes successfully.
  • She can temporarily increase the damaging capabilities of her bites and give her bites the ability to restore her life force, by entering a state in which she feels a thirst for vital fluids[1].
