Karpoor Chandra Kulish is a renowned name in the field of Journalism [1]. He is the founder of Rajasthan Patrika Group [2] which is among India’s leading Media Groups. Kullish’s name is taken with pride and reverence when it comes to the Hindi Journalism. In 1956, he started a one page Hindi daily that evolved and flourished in today’s well renowned "Rajasthan Patrika"[3]He was the founder of Patrika Group.

Quality and credibility was the basic characteristic of Kulish’s [4] that led to its popularity and today, it is among the top ten newspapers of India. He started this daily without any help from any of the business family or even any political help which is quite astonishing when we look at the success of this Media Group over the period of time. He mainly focuses on the editorial freedom, news fairness and reality in the news that ultimately led to the evolution of a one page Hindi daily in to a complete, successful and renowned Media Group of India. Karpoor Chandra Kulish was a great visionary and multi talented personality along with these qualities; he had a great skill of adjusting with the changing trends that eventually turned a one page daily into [5] has evolved as a voice and soul of common people of the state. Every reader has a great deal of trust in the each and every word used in the Patrika. This trust has been developed by Karpoor Chandra Kulish’s rigorous efforts over the decades.

Surname Kulish

‘Kulish’ means ……… Before giving new heights to his life, he gave himself the surname of ‘Kulish’ when he was around 20 years old. He proved this by reaching new horizons of success through his contribution in the field of Journalism. His write-ups against the social evils like-superstitions were simply majestic.

Author, Writer, Poet, Editor....

Kulish was a vibrant person with mastery in every field of life. He was a poet, an author, a Journalist, a renowned thinker and contributed immensely in every field with his outstanding talent and knowledge. India Today rightly describes him as a “live legend of Journalism in Rajasthan.” He was born on 20th of March, 1926 in Soda village of Tonk district of Rajasthan. The early stage of his childhood education came under various stalemate but the brilliance of Kulish broke all the odds and eventually came to Jaipur.

After the completion of high school education, he got associated with “Sahitya Sadawarta Sanstha”for promoting the national language Hindi. He also started a new life at “Sahitya Sadawarta” as a teacher to fulfill his dream of teaching hindi.

Man Of Values

Karpoor Chandra Kulish [7] started his journalistic life in 1951 and the major turn in his life came in the year 1956 when he started an evening daily in the form of Rajasthan Patrika. His dreams began to be fulfilled by this daily “Rajasthan Patrika” and a small start began to cross new landmarks gradually by attracting millions of readers. Writing was like a worship for him in which he never compromises with it. His pen always worked for the upliftment of the socially discriminated people and establishes Rajasthan Patrika as a newspaper of highest values among the readers. He called readers as “the soul of a Newspaper.”


Today, Rajasthan Patrika [8] is flourishing its root in the states of Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, W. Bengal, Gujarat and Karnatka. Besides, emerging as the fastest growing Hindi daily in Madhya Pradesh, it has also deepens its roots in Chattisgarh capital Raipur and Bhillai. Group has also started an evening newspaper called News Today.


Eyeing On The Top

In the initial stages of Patrika's developmental period, Kulish always dreamed for the top. His editorial team comprises of the states renowned writers whose skills were well known at that time. Under his able leadership, the Patrika became a house of values and principle based journalists. On the technical front, Patrika never lagged behind and used the latest printing machines. From cylinder machine to the rotary web offset or news line or the colorful printing machines of heat presses, all of these were first used by Patrika to give the readers an ample printed experience. The lino-mono type casting machines to the photo type setting techniques were used by the Kulish. All these advancement in the technical machines provided an opportunity for the workers to become graphic designer, DTP operators and page setters at Patrika.


Courageous And Unbiased

Kulish's writing was full of courage and free from any kind of biasness that made his journalistic style a unique and daring one. The main highlight of his writing remained the freedom of speech and expression which still makes Patrika a distinct daily from others. To maintain this style, he never dare about any government party and keeps his work to flourish on his own values and principles. The same technique is still followed by the Patrika and thats the reason behind the success of Patrika among the readers. He gave opportunities to various columnist to prove their mettle and among such written columns are “Nagar Prakrima,” “Aao Gaon Chale,” “Subhashit Pradeep,”Chanakya Neeti,” and “Tattav Bodh” are some of them.


In Emergency

During the period of emergency, he traveled to several villages in that period and wrote a series “Mein Dekhta Chala Gaya” in which he emphasized on the social life of the rural dwellers. Due to his writings, rural dwellers got lot of relief. At the age of 60, Kulish dedicated his life to spirituality from journalism and brought the scientific side of Vedas in the reader friendly language through Patrika. Amongst the most important talks on Vedic Science were aired on Voice of America, BBC London and Radio German. As a director, he also proved his mettle by directing “Geet Govind” a classical composition in association with Doordarshan. Author of many books, Kulish also wrote a column named “Polampol” which is termed as his literary will.


Awards

His contribution in the field of journalism is immense and can't be thought of without achievements or awards. He received “Haldi Ghati award” in 1983, “B.D Goenka award” in 1987, All India Editor's Guild Award” in 1999, “ Dr. Headgovar Pragya award” in 1993. He was also conferred with “Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi award” “Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi award” by President K.R Narayanan. He also composed 11 Vedas in a single volume which is considered as the largest and most bulky in terms of weight in the world. Its weight is 16 kg and dimensions of 15:32 inches.


Contribution To The Society

Kulish was of the opinion that we should give back to the society, what we have taken from it. He established a “Janmangal Public Charitable Trust” and kept donating an exact amount every year. The trust is working in the field of education, health, sports and many other fields to support the needy. "Patrakarita" provided financial support in the times of natural disasters like earth quakes and floods as in Gujarat and Uttar kashi. The families of Kargil martyrs were also provided with crores of financial support that was a landmark in the field of Media industry for donating to the victims. Many other programmes like water reservation, health camps, learning license for youths and many other social upliftment programmes has been initiated by Patrika Group.


Heritage

Karpoor Chandra Kulish finally left this world forever on 17th of January, 2006. His contribution in the field of Journalism and the personality he possessed will always be remembered in the Journalistic world. His family consists of his wife and three children, two sons and one daughter.
