Marvi Sirmed is a controversial far-left journalist, political commentator, governance specialist, freelance columnist, theater actress, peace and human rights activist and an independent blogger. She currently lives in Islamabad, Pakistan. She is often accused of controversial reporting due to her stance against the creation of Pakistan.

Career

Journalism and work experience

Sirmed started her career as a journalist in 1990. She began working an article writer. Other positions include sub editor, editor of the women’s page, editor of the students’ page and member of investigative team in different national dailies, such as Daily News, Daily Jang, Khabrein. After that, she had worked with Crescent Model School and Pamir Knot College, as subject specialist in chemistry and English linguistics. Sirmed has covered wars in the Palestinian Territories, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Chechnya, Bosnia, Azad Kashmir & Sri Lanka. Other work experience includes:

  • National Project Manager of a parliamentary development project for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Strengthening Democracy through Parliamentary Development (SDPD) in Pakistan
  • Institutional Development Specialist with the Ministry of Women Development, Government of Pakistan
  • Policy Advocacy Specialist with National Commission on the Status of Women, as a UNDP expert

Organizational activism and feminism

She joined the South Asia Partnership Pakistan and has established many organizations for women working in Punjab and Sindh. In 2000, she joined the Institute of Overseas Pakistanis and contributed in Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency. She also joined the Aurat Foundation's Legislative Watch Programme in 2001, working for the betterment of women. She is affiliated with the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA).

International activism

Sirmed was the part of International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP) run by the State Department of the United States of America, in 2004. She is Initiative for Peace in South Asia (WIPSA), Women’s Action Forum, Insaani Haqooq Ittehad, Pakistan India Peoples Forum, South Asian Free Media Association, and Pakistan Forum for Social Democracy. She has been visiting the SAARC region as member of high profile delegations.

Activism in Pakistan

She is a human rights activist in Pakistan. She aims to make Pakistan a secular state rather than Muslim state.[1][2] Sirmed has been accused of mustering up falsehoods against the Pakistan establishment in congruence with foreign agenda designed to damage the perception of Pakistani sovereignty. Despite questionable statements made by Sirmed on video, she continues to deny that she is anti-national. [3]
