Lawson, formerly known as The Grove, are a four-piece British band signed to Polydor Records. The band consists of Andy Brown, Adam Pitts, Joel Peat and Ryan Fletcher, originally from Liverpool, Brighton, Nottingham and Chesterfield respectively. The band is based in London. On 27 May 2012, they released their debut single, "When She Was Mine", their debut album Chapman Square is released on the 22nd of October 2012. It was announced in early June that their second single would be 'Taking Over Me', due to be released on August 5th, 2012. Their 3rd singles first air play is on the 2nd of September. "The Grove" decided to change their name because Andy was diagnosed with a brain tumour. His doctor was called "Dr. Lawson." That's where the name "Lawson" comes from. [1]

History

Lawson's former band name 'The Grove' came from American shopping centre 'The Grove.' Adam Pitts sketched the 'Lawson' logo freehand on an envelope. After finishing at a "Brit" style music school, drummer Adam Pitts started searching for a singer-songwriter. He had contacted Andy Brown through his acoustic Myspace page and just over 3 months later they met up in London. Andy introduced Adam to bass player Ryan Fletcher, who Andy had met a few years back at a similar "Brit School" style music college. They agreed to form a band, bringing in guitarist Joel Peat, who knew Ryan since a young age, to complete the band. [2] The band began recording material in early 2010, and their debut recording, "When She Was Mine", became one of the highest rated songs on YouTube within a week. They soon began playing gigs around the United Kingdom, including Wireless Festival[3] and Ultrasound Festival[4] The name 'Lawson' comes from Liverpool-based surgeon Dr. Lawson, who operated on lead singer Andy when he had a brain tumor.

In 2011, they were a support act for one of Britain’s biggest pop bands, British-Irish sensation The Wanted on their The Behind Bars Tour. The band made a great impression on the audience and received good reviews. Having developed a friendship with the The Wanted, they returned in 2012 for The Wanted's #TheCode Tour, and have since stayed bestest mates. The band told In Demand that they find working with them very inspiring. "The Wanted boys are amazing and we love them, we became so close and they really looked after us on tour but also played a lot of pranks." They have also stated that watching The Wanted perform first hand gave them something to aspire to because they had seen how much the band had grown within a year, especially in the U.S. "The Wanted lads are amazing, they're absolutely incredible with us. We did the theatre tour and the arena tour with them, so we've watched them in about a years time go from doing theatres to then doing arenas, and now smashing it in the U.S as well. It's massively inspirational and they are all such nice lads!" They also supported The Saturdays on their 'All Fired Up' tour in 2011.[2] On 8 September 2011, it was announced that the band had been signed to Polydor Records. After signing to a major label, Lawson opened shows for other manufactured acts such as Will Young,[5] Avril Lavigne,[6] and as stated before, again for The Wanted on The Code tour,[7] playing venues such as The O2 Arena. They performed their own headline tour in January 2012[8] and have supported Westlife on the final dates of their farewell tour in Croke Park, Dublin. [9] They have also been added to the T In The Park line up for 2012. [10] Their first single, 'When She Was Mine', was released on 27 May 2012 and reached number 4 in the official UK charts.[11] Their second single, Taking Over Me, was released on the 5th August 2012. The band had their second headline tour in May 2012 in which they visited locations Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, London and Birmingham. [12]

Lawson also appeared on Blackberry Summer Daze as themselves in August 2012.

Lawson have announced a Hometown Tour which will give Andy, Adam, Ryan and Joel the opportunity to play an intimate gig in the individual cities they grew up in and ending in their current hometown, London. They are to play five tour dates, starting on the 31st October 2012, in Liverpool until the 6th November 2012, in London.

Sheffield, Nottingham and Brighton are all sold out, there are limited tickets still available for Liverpool and London.

Guitarist Joel Peat said: "We're all so excited to release our debut album, we've been building up to it for the past 4 years so doing shows in our Home Towns feels like the perfect way to celebrate. Performing live is what we love the most so to be able to play our biggest venues to date in the Cities where we grew up is very special."

Lawson's 3rd single Standing In The Dark is released 14th October 2012.

Chapman Square, Lawson's first album is available from 22nd October.

Lawson have many inspirations, such as John Mayer.
