FTL: Faster Than Light is a roguelike video game developed by Subset Games. FTL has been announced on February 27, 2012 via Kickstarter and released in September 14, 2012 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.[3]

Gameplay

The gameplay focuses on real-time space combat with roguelike elements, such as permadeath.

The player starts by visually customising his crew and choosing his ship. Afterwards he receives the task to traverse through multiple space sectors to reach a specific destination. He moves from sector to sector, in which he can find shops to purchase new weapons and abilities, distress signals as well as battles. There are also dangerous areas, such as nebulas which block out some of a ship's security systems and solar flares and asteroid belts, which can damage ship hulls. Each playthrough generates a random space map, therefore also affecting the random encounters.

Battles are fought in pausable real-time. Each ship has different rooms which contain the different abilities, such as shields, weapons, oxygen etc. Minor or major damage can be done on a specific room, represented by either orange (for minor) or red (for major). There is also the chance of a hit causing either a hole or fire, both of which could prove fatal if not dealt with quickly. If either all the crew members die or the ship's hull health reaches zero, the game is over.
