Thorpe's missing shoes

Pinethicket,

I have searched the internet but there is no corroboration that I can find for the Jim Thorpe shoes story apart form this BBC radio prog which will disappear forever in a few days time:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01kbhjt

Whether you accept that as proof or not is up to you but it certainly explains his odd footwear in the photo! Personally I think it worthy of inclusion as it demonstrates the sheer grit of the man!

Also, the contributor of the story is none other than Jim Wheeler who wrote Jim Thorpe's autobiography so there is a lot of credibility there!— Preceding unsigned comment added by Grantandersonuk (talkcontribs) 16:24, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grantandersonuk: Thanks for sending the link to the BBC recording. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Before I deleted the initial posting on July 4th, I also searched the internet and failed to find anything. When you mentioned Wheeler's name in your message, I found an e-copy of his book, but I did not see the story in a search for shoes or stolen or socks. Then I scanned the section on the 1912 Olympics, and I did not see the story. But Wheeler sure told the story on the BBC program, and I will look in the book a bit harder later on. I agree with you that it is a colorful tidbit of information; plus, Wheeler said it was his favorite story!
Here is the e-copy of Wheelers book:
If you want to restore the story on Thrope's page and use the BBC broadcast as a reference, I would not object. Right now it is a valid reference. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 18:10, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I finally found a valid reference! It was not in Wheeler's book; he may have learned the missing shoe story after the book's publication. I already made the edit. Nice working with you, Grantandersonuk; hope to see you around. Pinethicket (talk) 22:42, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! My pleasure too! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grantandersonuk (talkcontribs) 10:48, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anaesthetist has a lower intelligence when compared to Orthopaedic Surgeons

This is found from a multicenter study published from a highly regarded journal (British Medical Journal) in Dec 2011. Please respect the evidence even if you may disagree with the findings.

Carbon capture and storage edit

Hi, we were updating the page as it is very out of date - a lot of the content was no longer valid, and the comments on the talk page were suggesting that it needed an update. The content we added / replaced was much more suitable, and didn't contradict itself as some of the original content did. We did not know about the edit summary element, but will use this in the future. How do we go about reinstating our update? Do we re-save our changes, with an edit summary or do we need to do anything else? 81.179.233.66 (talk) 09:23, 12 July 2012 (UTC)IEAGHG[reply]

Hi 81.179.233.66: The key is to let other editors know what you are doing. Bottom line is that that involves using the edit summary. Space is limited so your description has to be short and simple. If your changes are complex and perhaps controversial, it is best to explain what you intend to do on the article's talk page, and invite discussion from other editors who are involved in the page. Once consensus has been reached, the edits can be referenced back to the talk page using the edit summary (e.g., updating article as per talk page discussion: Talk:Carbon_capture_and_storage#Major_Update). Sadly, many editors do not use the edit summary now-a-days, and it results in a lot of confusion and conflict. And it costs everyone time. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 09:41, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:VAND clarification

Just for clarification, this edit was unconstructive and unsourced, but it was not vandalism. Please read through WP:VAND if you haven't recently. It's important that we don't label edits vandalism that are not. It's likely this user is operating in good faith, but simply doesn't understand how wikipedia works or what we do here. Thanks!   — Jess· Δ 20:23, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Author/Pinethicket

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at the University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Nutrition. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article and or other health-related articles. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please reply via my talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance. July 23 editing of 'Stickleback'

Sir;

Thank you for your message regarding the editing of the wikipedia page stickleback on this IP address - 150.237.85.185. I believe this address is one assigned to the University of Hull, where I am a student; is there a procedure for notifying the editorial community at large that this is the case? Thank you for your time.

Tim Oliver — Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.237.85.185 (talk) 10:13, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately Wikipedia's system of distributing messages to a shared IP address is a shotgun approach. The message is posted with the hopes that the person it apples to will ultimately look at it, but that is hit or miss. There is a standard disclaimer that applies: “If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.” This problem will continue as long as unregistered users are allowed to edit on Wikipedia; it is a necessary evil. Thanks for your concern, Pinethicket (talk) 10:29, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Those were my edits to my talk page, I just never logged in. Just letting you know, no hard feelings. Zonafan39 (talk) 14:35, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am always wary of edits to a user page by anyone except the user. After-the-fact I question the wisdom of my getting involved. But I reasoned you could restore the edit as easily as I could. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 15:50, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Pinethicket. You have new messages at Jim1138's talk page.

Page edit?

Dear Pinethicket,

Recently, I received a message about an edit that I "made" on a Wiki page, that has been automatically reverted due to vandalism. I would like to let you know that I, myself, don't recall editing the page at all. Is it possible that there is confusion with the IP address?

Yours,

Spongebot64 (talk) 18:41, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, Spongebot64, this happens all the time. But without the IP address, I am unable to look at the specific edit. Some IP addresses are shared by multiple users, and others are changed at the discretion of your internet provider. So an IP address is not like your telephone number. If you are interested, take a look at IP address assignment. There is a statement about ignoring messages on IP edits that you did not make: "If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices." To me that is good advice. This will always be a problem as long as Wikipedia allows unregistered people to edit. But you have apparently already done the suggested cure for this problem--that is, to register. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 18:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Change on Tidewater accent

I am not sure how to ask for some sort of verification on the parts on "wic spot," "wikkies," "clown," and "silly," because I am from the area and have never heard them. I also asked people at school today and they had never heard them either. I was just trying to get a verification or reference, for it might be a joke considering a google search didn't find any results that pertain to "wic spot" or "wikkies" used in context. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.11.168.91 (talk) 19:29, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for contacting me, 108.11.168.91; I see what you are trying to do now. Please take a look at WP:Citation needed. You need to insert a "tag" following the questionable text, indicating to other editors that you have questioned its validity. It would be [citation needed] (look at this in the edit mode so you can see the code). If other editors cannot resolve the issue, it is OK to delete the section after a "respectable" length of time. I always mention that deleted text that had a "cn tag" in the edit summary. A respectable amount of time might range from several weeks to several months. Hope you stick around. Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 19:47, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that I'm an idiot and couldn't figure it out. I haven't edited any articles before really. Thanks, and I will probably delete that section after a "respectable" length of time if it isn't proven true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.11.168.91 (talk) 23:50, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, 108.11.168.91; glad to help out. Wikipedia is a fairly complicated system; so don't feel alone. One of the big tricks is to learn how to search for the how-to information. I kept notes on things when I started editing here and still do after three years. Take care, Pinethicket (talk) 07:47, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Second time in two nights I've seen an IP only deleted a number of film theatrical relasee posters. Same IP prefix 39.48.x.x Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 11:14, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, Jim1138. I shuda looked at the IP's contributions, but just assumed (wrongly) it was an isolated incident. I'll watch more closely in the future. Wonder what they have against movie posters? Regards, Pinethicket (talk) 12:03, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This happens all the time, 80.3.100.182. My edit was done over 2 years ago; so who knows who was using the IP address at that time. My feeling is that if you look 2 years back at the page history, it was a good edit. Please note that some IP addresses are shared by multiple users, and others are changed at the discretion of the internet provider. So an IP address is not like your telephone number--yours forever and ever. If you are interested, take a look at IP address assignment. There is a statement about ignoring messages on IP edits that you did not make: "If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices."
