Malakar
Malakar (Bengali: মালাকার) is a Bengali Hindu surname spread throughout West Bengal and Bangladesh. The Malakars are traditionally garlander by trade. The governments of India and West Bengal both have classified Malakars under Other Backward Classes but lot of them continued belonging to General category. [1]
Origin
Malakars lived around Dhaka and other smaller towns of Bengal. The origin of the word Malakar comes from Sanskrit. Its a Sandhi of mala and akar, which means a person who gives shape to mala, i.e. a garlander. In some other definition Malakar comes from Mali which means gardener, a backward class at that time. In 1994 Malakars are included in the OBC category, but whose traditional profession was garlanding, many of them remained in General category.
