The Asseburg is a ruined hill castle on a narrow crest of the Asse ridge in the Harz Mountains of Germany, not far from Wolfenbüttel. The castle appeared between 1218 and 1223 under Gunzelin of Wolfenbüttel as a Ganerbenburg, or castle managed and occupied by more than one family or branch. From its dimensions it was the largest hill castle in North Germany and was considered impregnable. Since 1492 it has been in ruins because it was abandoned by its garrison in the course of a feud and set on fire.
