Vellmar is a town in the north of Kassel district, Hesse, Germany and is located in the Ahna-valley. It has four districts. As of 2005 it has a population of 19,743 inhabitants.

History

Vellmar gained the cityrights at 30. August 1975 on the 1200-year-anniversory. At this time it was together with Baunatal the youngest city in the district of Kassel. From 1975 to the middle of the 1980ies the center of the city with the townhall, shops, medical-center and the residential area "Musikerviertel" was build. Throu the city floats the river Ahne, that gave the 1986 build local recreation area Ahnepark its name. The traffic infrastructure of Vellmar consists of the railwaystation Obervellmar, railwaystation Niedervellmar and the main road B 7. Recently it was planned to connect Vellmar in 2007 with the tram line of Kassel.
