Genjing Records (simplified Chinese: 根茎唱片; traditional Chinese: 根莖唱片) is an independent record label that specializes in releasing vinyl recordings of Chinese musicians.
Launched in Beijing in March 2011, China's first vinyl-only record label was initially intended as a platform for founder Nevin Domer's hardcore band Fanzui Xiangfa to release and distribute their own recordings.[1] After realizing the large potential for a new independent record label, however, Domer determined that he could also help other independent Chinese musicians to release material on vinyl, a medium that had been rapidly gaining favor within the country's growing collector community throughout the mid-2010s.[2][3]
Since then, Genjing Records has shifted its mission statement to focus primarily on creating connections between China's DIY independent music community and its international counterparts, a process that is primarily facilitated by the release of split 7" records in cooperation with global partner labels and subsequent multinational tours in which bands criss-cross each others' countries.[4][5][6]
In August 2012, Genjing worked with one of the first expatriates involved in the mid-1990s Beijing punk scene, David O'Dell, to host a charity punk-rock show and auction in association with Half the Sky, a Chinese charitable organization dedicated to poor rural children.[7][8]
On August 19, 2012, Genjing Records was featured on DIY punk fanzine Maximumrocknroll's weekly radio show.[9]
As of December 14, 2012[update], Genjing Records has issued over a dozen releases, including efforts from AM444, Demerit, Dear Eloise,[10][11] Duck Fight Goose, the Fever Machine, Gum Bleed, Round Eye,[12][13] Snapline, Wang Wen (罔聞) and Fanzui Xiangfa.
The label's international catalog includes releases by Cheap Stuff, Libyan Hit Squad, SS20, Sick Times[14], Tiny Ghosts and Tussle.
