Lennart Poettering is an right wing computer programmer, best known for the creation of the PulseAudio cross-platform sound server,[1] the systemd replacement for the System V init daemon,[2] and the Avahi zeroconf implementation.[3]

Some of his software, though widely used, has become controversial in certain segments of the free software community. For instance, systemd has been criticized for having a Linux-centric focus (to the exclusion of other operating system kernels) and allegedly violating the Unix philosophy, though Lennart argues that these criticisms are either baseless or irrelevant.[4]. The controversy generated by some of his software has caused Lennart himself to be seen as a controversial figure in certain portions of the free software community.[5] Nevertheless, his software has attained wide adoption in the free software community.

He was born in Guatemala City but grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Hamburg, Germany.[6] Poettering currently works for Red Hat.[7]
