"Same Love"
Song

"Same Love" is a 2012 single by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert taken from the joint Macklemore / Ryan Lewis album The Heist and the fourth single from the album after "My, Oh My", "Wing$" and "Can't Hold Us" and prior to their massive international hit "Thrift Shop". It was number 15 on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2012, their second song on the Hottest 100, with Thrift Shop being number 1.

Context

The song was in support of legalizing same-sex marriage particularly during the campaign for Washington Referendum 74 (R-74 or Ref 74), a Washington state referendum to approve or reject the February 2012 bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state.

Macklemore explained that the song also came out of his own frustration with hip hop's positions on homosexuality. "Misogyny and homophobia are the two acceptable means of oppression in hip-hop culture. It's 2012. There needs to be some accountability. I think that as a society we're evolving and I think that hip hop has always been a representation of what's going on in the world right now."[1]

He says he began to write the song from the perspective of a gay 13-year-old, after his mother sent him an article about the boy's suicide. But while discussing this with his producer Ryan Lewis told him "You know what? This is good, but this isn't your story... and you have a story."

Chart performance

It was released on July 18, 2012. Although it did not enter the Billboard Hot 100, but it has peaked at number 5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, which acts as an extension to the Hot 100, effectively rendering a peak of #105 on Billboard.[2] The song also replaced Thrift Shop at number 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts in January 2013[3], making Macklemore only the third artist to replace themself at number one on the ARIA Charts after Madonnna in 1985 and the Black Eyed Peas in 2009 .[4]
