Trafalgar High School is a years 7-12 co-ed school located in Trafalgar, Victoria. It was officially opened on June 14 1964 after running classes on the original Trafalgar Primary School grounds, now Balfour Park. When it opened the school had 95 pupils.

History

The Light Timber Construction Type 300 High School was officially opened on Friday 12 June 1964, by the Hon. J Bloomfield MLA, Minister for Education; after a successful motion was passed at a public meeting held in 1961 to press for a High School in Trafalgar.

By 1966 the enrolment had reached 300. The first Higher School Certificate (now VCE) class graduated in 1971.

In September 1974, the new Trade Wing was opened and the science room extended to include a laboratory and a second science room.

The Education Community Activity (ECA) Centre was opened in 1982 by the Hon. James C.M. Balfour CBE, MP, with an official opening held on 12 February.

Redevelopment

Late 2009 saw the removal of both the 'S' and 'W' wings of the school. Demolished rooms included the Library, Home Economics room, the video room, as well as 5 classrooms. The Library was moved to the THINK building. Other classes are now located in portable rooms in the car park as well as the front oval. A new building to replace the demolished rooms is presently under construction and is expected to be finished in 2010. This building will include a library, canteen, home economics room, male and female toilets and five classrooms.[1]

Classrooms

The West Wing was completed in Janurary 2010. It included 8 New classrooms only seperated by sliding doors to improve class to class activities. It also included the school canteen, function room, meeting room toilets home economics room and the library. The Year 7&8 form groups are held here.

Trafalgar High School Student Paper

In March 2008 the Trafalgar High School Student Newspaper was established by a student at the school (the paper changed its name after the first issue). Since then, the paper has grown in popularity and has remained entirely student-run and student-written. Any student can submit news articles, cartoons, stories, photos, poetry and any other print-suitable material and the paper. Publication is irregular, occurring only when there is enough material to go to print.
Popular recurring columns include Keith's Top Ten, a THS-specific sport section, and the Editorial. The Sad Garden comic strip also had a long publication run with the paper, which prompted the creation of its own website and its regular appearance in the Warragul Citizen newspaper.
