Shahbagh Chattar night view

Projonmo Chattar (বাংলায় প্রজন্ম চত্বর), also known as Shahbagh Square,[1] is a public square located in the Shahbagh in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It is the location of protests that began 5 February 2013 by the Awami Youth League, including teachers, students, politicians and cultural activists affiliated with the Awami League, demanding capital punishment for the war criminals of 1971. When a tribunal gave a life sentence to a war criminal of 1971 and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah, spontaneous agitation began and was quickly spread via different social networks and blogs.[1] Many social media and bloggers have compared the square with Tahrir Square in Egypt.[2]

Shyamoli Nasrin, wife of Martyr Intellectual Dr. AFM Alim Chowdhury proposed the name Projonmo Chattar on 6 February 2013 in the 2013 Shahbagh Protest and all people present there accepted this name with applause.[citation needed]

One of the protesters said, "We will not return home unless we get justice, complete justice".[2]The protest spread to other parts of the country, with sit-ins and demonstrations taking place in Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal, Mymensingh, Khulna, Rajbari District, Rajshahi, Rangpur District, Sunamganj, Noakhali and NarsingdiCite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page).
